What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Continuous Improvement Engineer, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $81,910 | $101,140 | $127,480 |
| May 2025 | $83,600 | $102,440 | $129,250 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about project ownership from baseline to hold?
We ask for one specific project and make the candidate rebuild it: the baseline, how it was measured, the countermeasure, the control plan and what the number did six months later. We want to hear who on the floor accepted the change and who resisted.
Candidates who can only describe the event week and the celebratory photo have usually not owned the sustain phase, which is where improvement engineers earn the title.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Continuous Improvement Engineer?
The median annual wage for Industrial Engineers in the United States was $102,440 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $83,600 and $129,250. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,370. 90% earned less than $159,860.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Employment concentration in major metros provides further salary context. The Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI area shows a median of $104,730 with a middle band width of $39,440. These metros maintain some of the highest concentrations of industrial engineers, based on the published employment data for these locations.
Continuous Improvement Engineers are mapped to the SOC 17-2112 Industrial Engineers category, which reports a national median annual wage of $102,440. The middle band width for this group is $45,650. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that because these engineers share an SOC code with all other industrial engineering roles, the broad data may not fully capture the compensation premiums associated with Lean/Six Sigma project expertise.
National manufacturing data highlights significant variation across sectors. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing shows a median of $127,140, significantly above the national engineering median. The Chemical Manufacturing sector (specifically NAICS 3250A1) reports a median of $118,700. These specific industry rows demonstrate that engineers focused on process improvement within complex manufacturing environments often see higher earnings than the aggregate national median for their broader occupational classification.
Key compensation components like performance bonuses, shift premiums, or specific technical training incentives are excluded from these BLS figures. The total national employment for this occupation is 365,740. The location quotient for Detroit is 3.87, and for Minneapolis it is 3.04, reflecting a heavy industrial presence. It is important to compare these annual amounts appropriately as the data does not provide hourly wage calculations.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
The national median of $102,440 covers all industrial engineering roles, while the petroleum manufacturing sector median of $127,140 reflects a specific industry that pays a premium for engineering talent. This difference highlights the impact of sectoral industry demand on base compensation.
What is the primary difference between the national median for Industrial Engineers and the petroleum manufacturing industry median?
The national median of $102,440 covers all industrial engineering roles, while the petroleum manufacturing sector median of $127,140 reflects a specific industry that pays a premium for engineering talent. This difference highlights the impact of sectoral industry demand on base compensation.
How much has the median increased for this occupational category since May 2024?
The median for this industrial engineering group increased by $1,300, rising from $101,140 in May 2024 to $102,440 in May 2025.
Does the provided middle band width account for all types of industrial engineering experience?
The middle band width of $45,650 reflects the salary range between the 25th and 75th percentiles for the entire occupational category. It represents a general range for this broad group but does not isolate specific experience levels or project types.
