What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Firmware / Embedded Engineer, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Firmware / Embedded Engineer in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$103,050$133,080$169,000
May 2025$105,210$135,980$171,980

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the authority you are offering?

Settle embedded product software rather than plant PLC programming before outreach begins. An attractive title cannot repair unclear responsibility for device firmware connecting electronics to the product's physical behavior once someone arrives. We put the difference around embedded product software rather than plant PLC programming in front of you so the interview tests missing experience rather than assuming it is already there.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Firmware / Embedded Engineer?

The median annual wage for Software Developers in the United States was $135,980 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $105,210 and $171,980. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $82,460. 90% earned less than $214,670.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Firmware / Embedded Engineer at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 1,687,890 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Manufacturing Headhunters reviews the Firmware / Embedded Engineer role within the Software Developers (15-1252) occupational code. For Firmware / Embedded Engineer in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $135,980; the May 2024 median is $133,080. Their arithmetic difference is $2,900.

They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. The middle-band width for this occupation is $66,770, which is calculated from a P25 of $105,210 and a P75 of $171,980. Because BLS measures this occupation across all industry sectors, these figures represent the broad market for software developers and do not isolate the specific embedded systems or hardware-interfacing engineering common in manufacturing.

The highest employment hubs for this group demonstrate significant pay variations, with the New York-Newark-Jersey City area reporting a median of $166,830 and the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area reporting $167,280. The middle-band widths for these locations are $75,320 and $79,060, respectively. Nationally, industry-specific medians are higher for Motor Vehicle Manufacturing at $172,360, Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing at $169,030, and Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing at $168,400, reflecting the sector demand for embedded systems expertise.

In screening for this role, we prioritize engineers who can diagnose hardware-related faults and go beyond high-level software code. The BLS occupation code is extremely broad, including purely software-based roles, so our recruiting methodology requires adjusting these baselines to reflect the niche value of embedded hardware-interfacing skills. For Firmware / Embedded Engineer in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded. Managers should use these figures as a starting point for assessing market alignment but must consider specialized technical experience to ensure competitiveness.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

For Firmware / Embedded Engineer in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $105,210 to $171,980 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity.

Why is the national industry median for Motor Vehicle Manufacturing higher?

That sector requires specialized embedded logic for vehicle-specific hardware. This demand drives the median above the broad Software Developer average.

How should firms adjust for the broad occupation code?

For Firmware / Embedded Engineer in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $105,210 to $171,980 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them.

What can I conclude from the two release estimates?

For Firmware / Embedded Engineer in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $135,980; the May 2024 median is $133,080. Their arithmetic difference is $2,900. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. It serves as a necessary adjustment factor for annual compensation planning.
