What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Inventory Accountant, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $64,660 | $81,680 | $106,450 |
| May 2025 | $67,020 | $83,680 | $109,810 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about the decision behind the experience?
The useful evidence is an inventory adjustment traced to its operational and accounting source, not a list of equipment or projects. Discuss what information was available during an inventory adjustment traced to its operational and accounting source. A clear explanation exposes financial inventory accounting rather than physical warehouse supervision much better than asking whether the candidate has held the title before.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Inventory Accountant?
The median annual wage for Accountants and Auditors in the United States was $83,680 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $67,020 and $109,810. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $56,020. 90% earned less than $144,090.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Is this the pay for a Inventory Accountant at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 1,449,500 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The Inventory Accountant role falls under the broad SOC 13-2011 occupation for Accountants and Auditors. With a national median wage of $83,680, this role saw a $2,000 increase since May 2024. The middle-band width is $42,790, encompassing a range from $67,020 at the P25 to $109,810 at the P75.
This range is particularly wide because it covers the spectrum from entry-level accounting clerks up to senior financial accountants. For an inventory accountant tasked with reconciling complex adjustments and identifying the operational sources of variance, this aggregate dataset provides limited granularity.
Regional employment hub data reveals a median of $105,650 in New York-Newark-Jersey City and $94,360 in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim. The location quotients are 1.27 and 1.21, respectively, which confirms a deep concentration of accounting professional roles in these regions. These localized figures are substantially above the national median, suggesting that candidates in these hubs are accustomed to high-cost labor premiums. However, hiring managers must remember that these numbers still reflect all types of accountants, not just those with inventory-specific manufacturing experience.
Relevant manufacturing sectors pay higher than the broad occupation, with Tobacco Manufacturing at $102,500, Engine, Turbine, and Power Transmission Equipment Manufacturing at $102,150, and Railroad Rolling Stock Manufacturing at $102,000. These figures represent the relevant upper-percentile benchmarks for the high-impact financial inventory work required in a plant environment. Since the BLS excludes performance incentives and non-salary bonuses, hiring managers must look at the upper-quartile industry data to construct competitive offers. The $42,790 middle-band width is a primary indicator of the discrepancy between basic accounting support and complex inventory control. A role requiring the tracking and tracing of inventory adjustments directly to their operational root cause requires an accountant who functions more as an analyst. Using the general $83,680 median will result in offers that are misaligned with the experience required for a senior-level inventory accountant, failing to account for the financial rigor required in high-variance manufacturing settings.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
What is the key difference between general accounting and inventory accounting?
General accounting often focuses on historical reporting, while inventory accounting requires tracing physical operational variance to financial records. This requires higher analytical skill and often demands higher pay.
How should an employer adjust for the New York hub's $105,650 median?
The New York median is significantly above the national average. Employers should expect to pay toward the higher industry benchmarks to attract candidates with specialized manufacturing inventory expertise.
Are the industry-specific medians around $102,000 reliable benchmarks?
Yes, these medians provide a much stronger baseline for senior-level accounting talent in manufacturing than the general $83,680 median. They are the target range for hiring experienced accountants.
