What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Process Technician, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $35,080 | $38,820 | $47,550 |
| May 2025 | $36,030 | $40,110 | $49,010 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.
- Supervisor occupation: Production Supervisor pay (SOC 51-1011)
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about safe work and credentials?
Process floors involve heat, pressure, moving parts and sometimes chemicals. We ask about lockout, hot-surface practice and material handling. Certificates in plastics or process technology show training, but they do not replace hours on equipment like yours.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Process Technician?
The median annual wage for Production Workers, All Other in the United States was $40,110 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $36,030 and $49,010. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $31,200. 90% earned less than $61,530.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Process Technician at a plant?
Process Technician is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 251,700 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The middle-band width for this occupation is $12,980, representing the variance between the P25 salary of $36,030 and the P75 salary of $49,010. Among industries, Tobacco Manufacturing lists a median of $77,630, while Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reflects a median of $59,620.
Manufacturing Headhunters examines the Process Technician role under the broader SOC 51-9199 title for Production Workers, All Other. The national median annual wage is $40,110, reflecting a $1,290 increase since May 2024. This SOC is quite broad and includes many types of production work, so hiring managers should confirm that the duties involve process parameter adjustments and SPC monitoring as required in specialized process tech roles.
These industry-specific figures illustrate the higher pay bands often found in high-regulation or complex manufacturing environments compared to the broader production worker category.
Geographic comparison reveals that Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA, shows a median of $39,520 and a location quotient of 1.1. Conversely, the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA, area shows a median of $40,970 with a higher location quotient of 2.29. High location quotients indicate a greater prevalence of these roles in the local economy, but these values do not correspond directly to local pay levels or available candidate pools.
BLS reporting for this SOC provides limited granularity, so hiring managers must consider that the data aggregates various levels of experience and different production environments. The compensation data excludes non-base components such as shift premiums and performance bonuses, which are often essential for securing qualified technical personnel. Because this SOC is an 'All Other' designation, it should be treated as a baseline, with specific process-based experience potentially commanding higher compensation than the listed median.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
What is the P25/P75 middle-band width for this role?
The national middle-band width for the production worker occupation is $12,980. This is the difference between the 25th percentile ($36,030) and the 75th percentile ($49,010).
How does the industry median for Aerospace compare to the national occupational median?
The Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing industry reports a median of $59,620, significantly higher than the national occupational median of $40,110. This shows how industry-specific complexity drives pay variance within the broader category.
What does a high location quotient indicate for the Atlanta area?
A location quotient of 2.29 indicates that production worker roles are more common in Atlanta than the national average. It does not reflect local salary levels or the number of qualified candidates.
