What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Product Design Engineer, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $81,800 | $102,320 | $130,290 |
| May 2025 | $84,130 | $104,110 | $132,590 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about a move that can hold up?
Someone working in design engineers from product OEMs and component engineering teams needs a clear reason to leave. If the answer depends on authority over product geometry and interfaces that can actually be manufactured that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Product Design Engineer?
The median annual wage for Mechanical Engineers in the United States was $104,110 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $84,130 and $132,590. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $73,990. 90% earned less than $164,340.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Product Design Engineer at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 296,810 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
Manufacturing Headhunters evaluates the Product Design Engineer role within the 17-2141 Mechanical Engineers occupation. The current national median is $104,110, an improvement over the May 2024 level of $102,320. The middle-band width is $48,460, calculated from a P25 of $84,130 and a P75 of $132,590.
It is necessary to recognize that these figures capture a wide range of engineering tasks and industries, so they should not be treated as a specific benchmark for design-only roles. The BLS does not extract product design as a separate occupational category.
Comparative metrics from key hubs indicate a median of $109,470 in Detroit-Warren-Dearborn and $123,900 in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim. The middle-band widths for these metros are $34,640 and $50,840, respectively. These values highlight the regional variance in engineering compensation for the broader occupation. National industry-specific benchmarks reveal that Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reaches a median of $140,600, and Audio and Video Equipment Manufacturing stands at $125,380, indicating that design roles in these sectors typically demand higher compensation than the national mean of $113,610 for the occupation.
When recruiting for this role, we prioritize candidates who demonstrate the ability to link assembly performance with tolerance selections and design modifications. The BLS mapping includes a vast array of mechanical roles, meaning the reported figures should be adjusted to account for the specialized skills required for product design ownership. Because the data excludes discretionary compensation such as performance bonuses or project incentives, hiring managers must consider these as separate components of the total reward package. The screening criteria used by our team go beyond the general SOC description, focusing on the candidate's ability to drive design execution while meeting precise manufacturing constraints.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Is the $104,110 median representative of all design engineers?
The median reflects the broader mechanical engineering occupation. It serves as a starting point, not an exact indicator for specialized product design roles.
What does the Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing median indicate?
The $140,600 figure shows the premium industries pay for engineering expertise. It demonstrates that specialized sectors pay above the general national median.
Are there limitations to the middle-band width for design roles?
The $48,460 band indicates significant pay variance within the broader engineering category. Firms should use this to gauge competitive ranges based on design experience.
