What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Product Engineer, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $81,800 | $102,320 | $130,290 |
| May 2025 | $84,130 | $104,110 | $132,590 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about a move that can hold up?
Someone working in product engineers supporting manufactured products after release needs a clear reason to leave. If the answer depends on authority over released product performance and engineering changes through its life that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Product Engineer?
The median annual wage for Mechanical Engineers in the United States was $104,110 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $84,130 and $132,590. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $73,990. 90% earned less than $164,340.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Product Engineer at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 296,810 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
Manufacturing Headhunters provides market insights for the Product Engineer role, which is mapped to the broader 17-2141 Mechanical Engineers SOC title. The national median for this occupation is $104,110 as of May 2025, compared to $102,320 in May 2024. The middle-band width is $48,460, representing the variance between the 25th percentile ($84,130) and the 75th percentile ($132,590).
It is essential to understand that this broader categorization encompasses many types of mechanical roles, not just product engineering, and thus represents a baseline for broader engineering salary structures.
In the primary employment hubs for this group, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn reports a median of $109,470, while the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro reaches $123,900. These regions represent the highest concentration of employment for the occupation. The middle-band widths are $34,640 for Detroit and $50,840 for Los Angeles, highlighting regional pay differences. Industry-specific benchmarks further demonstrate the variance, with Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing paying a median of $140,600 and Audio and Video Equipment Manufacturing at $125,380, both significantly above the general national median for the occupation.
Effective recruiting for this position requires identifying candidates who can trace field or production failures back to original design specifications and implement sustaining solutions. Because the BLS does not delineate product engineering as a specific row, these numbers serve as a foundation for total compensation but do not capture specific product ownership premiums. Hiring managers should consider that the BLS excludes non-wage compensation such as stock grants, performance-based awards, or specialized certification premiums. Candidates should be evaluated based on the complexity of their product ownership history rather than broad engineering medians, as those figures are constrained by the inclusion of entry-level and support-level mechanical roles.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How does the national median change impact product engineering hiring?
The $1,790 increase from May 2024 to May 2025 reflects a stable but positive wage trend for the occupation. Employers should update their bands to stay current with this shift.
Why is the national industry row higher than the national aggregate?
Sector-specific industry rows reflect higher concentrations of specialized design and process engineering tasks. These industries pay premiums for specific product-related engineering skills.
What should firms account for when offering roles based on this data?
Firms must add discretionary elements like project incentives, as the BLS annual median excludes these. The data provides a base for salary negotiations.
