What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Senior Process Engineer, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Senior Process Engineer in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$81,910$101,140$127,480
May 2025$83,600$102,440$129,250

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about an interview based on the work?

Build the interview around process windows and root causes that routine troubleshooting misses. A practical discussion of an investigation separating equipment variation from material behavior can test judgment without using confidential drawings or customer information. Those limits help establish technical authority over process decisions rather than shift supervision; they are part of competence, not a weakness to talk around.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Senior Process Engineer?

The median annual wage for Industrial Engineers in the United States was $102,440 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $83,600 and $129,250. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,370. 90% earned less than $159,860.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Senior Process Engineer at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 365,740 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Manufacturing Headhunters analyzes the senior process engineer role within the broader classification of Industrial Engineers. For Senior Process Engineer in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $102,440; the May 2024 median is $101,140. Their arithmetic difference is $1,300.

They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. The middle band width for this cohort is $45,650, extending from $83,600 at the P25 to $129,250 at the P75. These figures apply to the entire Industrial Engineer occupation and are not segmented by process-specific experience.

Sector-specific benchmarks indicate higher potential earnings. Professionals in Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing see a median of $127,140, and those in Chemical Manufacturing report $118,700. These figures serve as a national baseline and do not reflect local variances. For Senior Process Engineer in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area reports a median of $104,110, while Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington reflects $104,730. Detroit boasts a location quotient of 3.87 compared to 3.04 in Minneapolis. These values confirm these areas as major industrial hubs, yet they remain mapped to the broader industrial engineering title. The proximity to these averages is a starting point for assessing market alignment.

Effective screening for senior process roles moves beyond simple background checks. We conduct technical investigations to evaluate a candidate’s capacity for separating equipment-related variation from base material behavior. A successful senior process engineer demonstrates deep technical authority over the process itself, differentiating them from supervisors who are primarily focused on shift output or general personnel management.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Why is there no separate BLS category for process engineering?

The BLS classifies this role under Industrial Engineers based on broad professional duties. There is no specific, independently published wage data for process engineering as a discrete title.

What is the limitation of the $129,250 P75 figure?

This figure is an industry-wide representation for all Industrial Engineers. It does not account for the higher compensation typically found in specialized chemical or petroleum-based manufacturing.

How do you define technical authority for this role?

Technical authority in this context is the ability to diagnose complex, multi-factor process problems independently. It is distinct from managing the people who run the lines.
