What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Test Engineer, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $81,910 | $101,140 | $127,480 |
| May 2025 | $83,600 | $102,440 | $129,250 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about a move that can hold up?
Someone working in test engineers from electronics, equipment and component manufacturing needs a clear reason to leave. Explain how your opening changes their responsibility for production test methods that separate failures from test-system noise. If the answer depends on authority over production test methods that separate failures from test-system noise that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Test Engineer?
The median annual wage for Industrial Engineers in the United States was $102,440 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $83,600 and $129,250. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,370. 90% earned less than $159,860.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Test Engineer at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 365,740 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
Manufacturing Headhunters provides this analysis for the Test Engineer role, categorized under the broader SOC 17-2112 Industrial Engineers. The national median for this occupation is $102,440 per year, which is an increase from the $101,140 median reported in May 2024. The middle-band width is $45,650, covering the gap between the P25 of $83,600 and the P75 of $129,250.
This width illustrates the significant variance in compensation based on specific site requirements and technical seniority. Because this data is derived from a broader occupational classification, the listed figures do not isolate the niche duties of a plant-level test engineer from other industrial engineering functions.
National industry data indicates higher pay for specialized environments, such as Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing, where the industry median is $127,140. Chemical Manufacturing also commands a premium with a median of $118,700. These figures are strictly national industry benchmarks and should not be confused with localized site data. The BLS does not track plant-level test engineering as a standalone wage, nor does it include non-monetary benefits, sign-on bonuses, or performance incentives in these annual figures.
When comparing the national median to specific employment hubs, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn reports a median of $104,110 with a $45,180 middle-band width. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington reports a median of $104,730 with a $39,440 middle-band width. These two metros are chosen due to their high volume of reported engineering employment. Location quotient refers strictly to the concentration of the occupation within a region, not to candidate availability or local market competitiveness. It does not measure the actual pay or supply of qualified personnel.
The screening context focuses on a test-limit decision supported by repeatability and failure investigation, distinguishing production testing from design verification roles. The BLS data set for SOC 17-2112 encompasses a wide array of industrial engineering roles. Consequently, the data is topcoded by the breadth of the underlying SOC title. These figures are not estimates; they are the exact figures provided for this broader occupational category. Users should verify if the internal role responsibilities align with the primary functions of industrial engineering before applying this wage range.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How do industrial engineering classifications impact the accuracy of these test engineer salary figures?
The data reflects the broader SOC 17-2112 classification, which aggregates various roles under a single code. This means the figures provide an industry-standard baseline rather than a granular, role-specific wage for test engineering.
Why does the middle-band width differ between the national average and regional hubs like Detroit?
The middle-band width reflects the specific compensation variance found in the local BLS samples for that broader occupation. Regional market dynamics cause the range between P25 and P75 to expand or contract compared to the national average.
Does the Petroleum and Coal Products industry data provide a better benchmark for plant-level test engineering?
This industry-specific data represents a high-paying subset of the occupation at the national level. It serves as a valid point of comparison for high-complexity testing roles but remains limited by the broad scope of the SOC category.
