The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
A welding engineer is accountable for joints that cannot fail: structural frames, railcar members, pressure parts and heavy equipment. The job covers procedures, qualifications, robotic cells and the plain question of why a weld porosity problem appeared on second shift.
We search for engineers who have written and defended procedures to the governing code and who understand fabrication as well as metallurgy. We also ask how they train welders on a new procedure and how they confirm that the qualification on paper matches what happens at the station on a long second shift.
We ask which code the candidate worked under, such as AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX, and who wrote the procedures. We ask about qualification testing, essential variables and what happened when an auditor questioned a procedure.
We ask about cell design, fixturing, programming support and weld parameters. We ask about the toughest process problem they solved, such as part fit-up variation or distortion. We want to know how they worked with controls and robot technicians.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
We ask about their last significant defect, such as lack of integrated CAD/CAM tools, cracking or distortion, and how they traced it. A real welding engineer can describe the base material, the filler, the heat input and what changed. We also ask about corrective action to the customer.
Credentials that matter
AWS CWI or CWEng matters in many plants and in some customer contracts. We check what the candidate holds, when it was earned and whether they actually inspect or supervise inspection.
Defects and root cause
We ask about their last significant defect, such as lack of integrated CAD/CAM tools, cracking or distortion, and how they traced it. A real welding engineer can describe the base material, the filler, the heat input and what changed. We also ask about corrective action to the customer.
Fit with your fabrication type
We find out what the candidate has welded, how thick it was and which inspection methods applied. We tell you plainly where a candidate has gaps.
Red flags we screen for
We watch for engineers who cannot explain why a procedure was written the way it was, who relied on a single inspector for all verification, or who describe robotic cells without knowing the weld parameters. We also ask whether they have been on the floor during a bad shift.

Direct search
Where are qualified people working now?
Our best candidates come from welding engineering graduates in the first years of their careers, and from engineers at heavy equipment makers, railcar builders and structural fabricators who already work under demanding codes. We also approach engineers active in local professional welding groups, who often handle procedure and qualification work.
The pools differ by seniority: graduates need a mentor and a structure, while experienced engineers need a role with real authority. We call both directly and explain your fabrication type and codes.
We also ask certified weld inspectors and welding supervisors who have studied engineering part-time. Some of them know the shop better than any graduate and are ready for a technical role.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
WPS and PQR to the governing code. Engineers who only used existing procedures are different from those who developed them. Credentials that matter. We also ask about practical shop experience, since credentials alone do not predict floor credibility. Fit with your fabrication type.

The search
How the search runs?
We contact references who worked beside the candidate, such as quality managers or shop supervisors. You receive a short list with notes on strengths and gaps, and we help you design an interview that includes a real procedure or defect from your plant.
Agree the brief
We start by understanding your fabrication: materials, codes, customers, current procedures and where defects appear. We then search the relevant pools and screen on the checks above, including a technical conversation about a defect.

Qualify the work and support the hire
Where relevant, we ask candidates what they would review in your existing procedure library during their first weeks, and which qualification records they would pull. These answers show whether the engineer thinks like an owner of the welding program or like an observer, and they help you decide who deserves a shop visit.

What else affects this Welding Engineer hire?
How do you charge for a welding engineer search?
The fee is a percentage of the first-year base salary of the person you hire, agreed in writing before the search begins. A real welding engineer can describe the base material, the filler, the heat input and what changed.
Can the search be confidential?
Yes: We describe your fabrication by sector and region, and we do not name customers or codes tied to a particular contract until a candidate has signed confidentiality terms. We ask which code the candidate worked under, such as AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX, and who wrote the procedures.
Will employed welding engineers consider a move?
Many do, especially those who lack authority over procedures in their current plant. We reach them directly and describe the code environment and the cell work.
How is relocation handled?
Welding engineering talent is limited and spread out, so relocation is often part of the conversation. We raise it early and match it to what your company can support.
Does Welding Manufacturing Engineer count as an alternate title?
Yes: We search that title and compare scope, such as procedure writing, cell work and inspection authority. A real welding engineer can describe the base material, the filler, the heat input and what changed.

The Six-Step Search
What do you get before interviewing?
1. Search CalibrationYou get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone. 2. Market MappingYou get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy.
1. Search Calibration
You get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone.
2. Market Mapping
You get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy. We identify the kinds of plants and teams where people already handle comparable equipment, processes and operating demands.
3. Professional Contact Intelligence
You get a way to reach working people directly. We check professional contact routes and approach candidates discreetly, without making your plant or vacancy public unless you approve.
4. Persistent Personalized Outreach
You get individual conversations about the actual opening. We explain the work, shift and location, ask whether a move makes sense, and follow up without pretending every person is interested.
5. Live Candidate Qualification
You get evidence of fit before spending interview time. We talk through decisions, equipment, results and reasons for moving, then distinguish direct experience from skills that would need support.
6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You get a focused short list with the information behind it. We explain motivation, practical constraints and concerns, support interviews, and keep offer decisions with your hiring team.
What should we discuss first?
When do we owe the fee?
Only if you hire a candidate we introduced. Without a hire, there is no fee.
What should you know before sending welding engineer?
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
