What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Channel / Distributor Sales Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Channel / Distributor Sales Manager in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$95,910$138,060$201,490
May 2025$100,360$148,270$207,340

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the decision behind the experience?

The useful evidence is a channel conflict resolved without losing technical accountability, not a list of equipment or projects. Discuss what information was available during a channel conflict resolved without losing technical accountability. A clear explanation exposes channel development rather than direct management of every end-user sale much better than asking whether the candidate has held the title before.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Channel / Distributor Sales Manager?

The median annual wage for Sales Managers in the United States was $148,270 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $100,360 and $207,340. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $73,170. 90% earned less than $290,540.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Channel / Distributor Sales Manager at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 637,080 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The national median for Channel and Distributor Sales Managers, mapped to the broader Sales Managers SOC 11-2022, is $148,270. This figure increased by $10,210 from the May 2024 median of $138,060. The middle-band width is $106,980, spanning from $100,360 at P25 to $207,340 at P75. These amounts reflect annual earnings for the 637,080 employees in the category.

Note that BLS data omits variable incentives common to distribution-focused sales management, which are vital for total package design.

Regional employment concentrations in New York-Newark-Jersey City and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim show medians of $215,150 and $132,330, respectively. These metros experienced medianChanges of $3,480 and $5,540. These figures are annual totals. Manufacturing Headhunters advises that these regional differences reflect high-cost market adjustments rather than specific manufacturing role value. Because these figures are based on the broader occupation, they represent the total spectrum of sales management across all sectors.

Industries with high demand for sales management include Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing at $215,500, Semiconductors at $200,050, and Pharmaceuticals at $194,160. These provide clearer targets for competitive pay than the total occupation median. These figures are national in scope and should not be confused with local facility-based wages. Managers should compare these to their candidate's specific technical sales background and industry experience before settling on a specific point in the middle-band width.

The screening process for this role prioritizes channel conflict resolution and the ability to maintain technical accountability. The role requires channel development focus, moving away from direct management of end-user transactions. The middle-band width of $106,980 is the standard reference, but actual offers will vary based on the level of channel complexity. The location quotient in the top metros confirms high availability of candidates, but hiring managers should not assume these figures represent the market ceiling.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Does this data reflect channel-specific incentives?

No, BLS occupation data is limited to total annual wages. It does not separate channel-specific bonuses, override percentages, or distributor-incentive pay.

What is the significance of the $215,500 industry median?

It serves as a benchmark for high-value manufacturing sectors. It is not a rule for all channel managers but a baseline for sectors with deep technical requirements.

How do I narrow the $106,980 band?

Narrow the band by evaluating the technical proficiency and the historical size of the distributor networks the candidate has successfully managed.
