What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For CNC Machinist, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

CNC Machinist in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$46,250$56,150$64,910
May 2025$47,570$58,750$67,700

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about mills, lathes and what the person actually runs?

A CNC Machinist title can mean very different jobs. One shop wants someone who loads bar stock and watches a lathe. Another wants a person who owns a vertical mill from fixture to final dimension. We ask which machines are on the floor, which parts they cut and how much of the setup the person does alone.

Then we look for candidates whose current machines and part families are close to yours.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a CNC Machinist?

The median annual wage for Machinists in the United States was $58,750 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $47,570 and $67,700.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $39,200. 90% earned less than $80,010.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a CNC Machinist at a plant?

CNC Machinist is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 287,050 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Manufacturing Headhunters reviews the CNC Machinist profile, which is mapped directly to the Machinists SOC. The May 2025 national median for this role is $58,750, showing a medianChange of $2,600 from May 2024. The middleBandWidth is $20,130, indicating a fairly stable middle-range pay structure for CNC machinists.

This data is aggregate for all types of machinists and does not differentiate by seniority, machine type, or shift differentials.

Sector data indicates that high-precision industries pay more than the broad machining average. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports a median of $108,490, while Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing lists $88,750. These industries pay significantly above the national median for all machinists. BLS reporting excludes shop-specific pay components such as overtime, shift premiums for second or third shift, and hazardous duty pay for specific plant conditions.

Regional concentration reveals key manufacturing hubs. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin reports a median of $59,520 with a location quotient of 1.35. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington lists a median of $62,070 with a location quotient of 2.61. The higher location quotient in Minneapolis suggests a very heavy concentration of machinists in the region relative to the total workforce. These figures represent all machinists in the region, not just CNC-specific roles, and include non-CNC machining work that may drag down the average.

CNC Machinists require NIMS credentials, print reading, and GD&T competency, alongside platform-specific control knowledge like industrial robot controllers, CNC control systems, or conversational CNC equipment. Because the SOC combines all machining, hiring managers must look at candidate-specific machine control experience rather than relying on the national median. The median salary provides a base, but specialized multi-axis CNC skills often justify wages well above the reported 75th percentile of $67,700.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Are shift premiums included in the $58,750 median salary?

No, the provided BLS figures are limited to base annual wages and exclude shift differentials or overtime pay. Employers typically add these on top of the base salary for second or third shift positions.

Why is the petroleum industry median for machinists so high?

The $108,490 median in petroleum manufacturing reflects specialized, high-stakes machining demands not found in standard machine shops. It is significantly higher than the general machinist median of $58,750.

What does a location quotient of 2.61 in Minneapolis mean for a machinist recruiter?

A location quotient of 2.61 shows that Minneapolis has more than double the national density of machinists. It indicates a sound machining sector but does not explicitly measure candidate availability or current local wage premiums.
