What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For 5-Axis CNC Machinist, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

5-Axis CNC Machinist in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$46,250$56,150$64,910
May 2025$47,570$58,750$67,700

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about machine and control match?

Different 5-axis machines use different kinematics and probing routines. Candidates strong on one may need time on another. We name the match and the gap for each person and let you weigh them.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a 5-Axis CNC Machinist?

The median annual wage for Machinists in the United States was $58,750 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $47,570 and $67,700. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $39,200. 90% earned less than $80,010.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a 5-Axis CNC Machinist at a plant?

The 5-Axis CNC Machinist title maps to the published occupation. BLS does not separate this process, credential, shift or plant-specific title from other work in the occupation. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 287,050 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Manufacturing Headhunters evaluates the 5-Axis CNC Machinist, which remains classified within the broader Machinists SOC. For 5-Axis CNC Machinist in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $58,750; the May 2024 median is $56,150. Their arithmetic difference is $2,600.

They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. For 5-Axis CNC Machinist in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $47,570 to $67,700 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. Because 5-axis work requires significantly higher skill than the average machinist role, this broad SOC mapping does not accurately capture the salary premium these specialists command in the market.

Industry sectors show how higher precision machining leads to higher medians. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports a median of $108,490, and Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing reports $88,750. These medians significantly exceed the machinist occupational average. For 5-Axis CNC Machinist in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

Regional employment concentration in machining hubs is significant. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin reports a median of $59,520 with a location quotient of 1.35. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington lists a median of $62,070 with a location quotient of 2.61. The high location quotient in Minneapolis shows a large concentration of machinists, though the data reflects the entire occupation and not just 5-axis specialists. The salary levels are baseline indicators and should be interpreted as general regional market benchmarks.

5-Axis machining covers both simultaneous 5-axis and 3+2 positioning, requiring strict control over prove-outs to avoid crashes. The current BLS data structure treats all machinists as a single group, failing to account for the specialized knowledge required for 5-axis work. Recruiters must distinguish candidates by their specific control platform experience and their history with tight-tolerance part manufacturing, as these abilities typically justify salaries exceeding the reported median.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

For 5-Axis CNC Machinist in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $47,570 to $67,700 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them.

Is the $58,750 median an accurate representation of a 5-axis machinist's salary?

For 5-Axis CNC Machinist in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $47,570 to $67,700 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. Specialized 5-axis work usually commands pay higher than the machinist median.

Are these salary figures influenced by second and third shift differentials?

For 5-Axis CNC Machinist in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

What does a location quotient of 2.61 in Minneapolis mean for a 5-axis role?

It shows that the Minneapolis region has a dense population of machinists, which is favorable for finding talent, but the location quotient itself does not dictate local 5-axis market wages.
