The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
Tell us the 5-axis machines, controls and parts for your search. We separate simultaneous work from 3+2 and find people who have proven tough programs.
Many résumés say 5-axis. The work behind them differs. Three plus two positions the part and cuts in three axes. Simultaneous motion moves all five at once. We ask which one the candidate did and on which machine and control. We also ask what size and material the parts were.
A 5-axis crash is expensive and dangerous. We ask how the candidate verifies a program, what they check in simulation and how they handle the first run. Good answers include checking tool and holder clearance, using reduced feed and keeping a hand on the stop. Carelessness here disqualifies a candidate quickly.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
Our recruiter conversations establish what the candidate says they personally handled, how they made decisions and why they would consider this opening. The brief identifies candidate-reported information, available supporting evidence and unresolved questions. Your team still assesses technical performance, site-specific safety requirements and the authority the person will need.
Tight-tolerance aerospace or medical parts
We ask about inspection, thermal drift and how the candidate handles a part that is just out. Someone who only machined soft aluminum may not carry over. We say so.
Machine and control match
Different 5-axis machines use different kinematics and probing routines. Candidates strong on one may need time on another. We name the match and the gap for each person and let you weigh them.
Programmer, machinist or both
Alternate titles like 5-Axis Programmer / Machinist describe a hybrid. We ask whether the person writes toolpaths, runs the machine or does both. A hybrid is valuable but rare, and we avoid presenting a programmer as a machinist or the reverse.
Red flags in multi-axis claims
A story with no crash, no scrap and no lesson is suspect, because real multi-axis work includes mistakes. We listen for how the person learned from them and whether they talk about safety checks naturally.
Commute, shift and relocation
Skilled multi-axis people are scarce, so many candidates will need relocation or a long drive. We ask early whether that is truly possible and what family or housing limits exist.
Fit versus title for multi-axis roles
A 5-Axis Programmer / Machinist may mostly program, mostly run, or switch between both. Simultaneous 5-Axis Machinist may mean someone who runs a single trusted program all day. We ask for a typical week and the last thing they changed on their own. That separates a person who owns the process from one who follows it.

Direct search
Where are qualified people working now?
Experienced 5-axis people sit in aerospace and medical machining suppliers, where complex parts are daily work. We approach them through peers and ask about their toughest recent part. They are usually well placed, so we explain why your role would be a real step.
Mold and die shops are another source. Their contour work builds strong simultaneous habits, though tolerance and material expectations differ. A mold person may be superb at surfaces and newer to aerospace documentation. We describe the strengths and gaps so you can decide how much training you can offer.
Because the pool is thin, we often start with conversations about the parts, not the job. Machinists who cut demanding work enjoy talking about it. That conversation shows the real depth faster than any résumé, and it gives us a respectful way to explain why your opening may be worth a look.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
- Red flags in multi-axis claims. Be wary of a candidate who cannot name the machine, the control or the largest part they cut.
- Commute, shift and relocation. We also check shift fit and current pay so that a strong technical match does not disappear at the offer stage.
- Tight-tolerance aerospace or medical parts. Some shops need people who hold small tolerances on exotic alloys.
Executive-search discipline, on every assignment
What do you get from the Six-Step Search?
Plant leaders, engineers and skilled technicians receive the same care in defining the work, researching relevant backgrounds and understanding the individual. Pulling a list and sending messages is not the hard part. The value is doing the research and qualification well enough to support a sound hiring decision.
Calibrate the work and the decision
We start with the operating problem, what the hire must improve and the decisions they will own. We agree what experience matters, who supports the role and what you can realistically offer. A maintenance leader inheriting reactive breakdowns needs a different brief from one building a reliability program.
Research relevant plants and people
We research manufacturing environments where people have handled comparable work. Process, equipment and decision authority matter more than a matching title. We look for relevant professionals, including people who are not applying, rather than treating an exported list as a completed search.
Make respectful, targeted contact
We explain why the work may be relevant and invite a conversation without pressure. We agree what information may be shared on a confidential search. Contact is the start of qualification, not evidence that someone wants the job or fits it.
Discuss the work they personally performed
Our conversations separate an individual's decisions and responsibilities from the team's results. We explore judgment under pressure, reasons for considering a move and practical expectations. For technicians, that includes equipment background, shift, commute and the support available. Candidate accounts are identified as such; a conversation is not a technical certification.
Write down fit, gaps and open questions
You receive a written candidate brief connecting the person's background to your operating problem. It explains motivation and practical fit, the gaps we have identified and what remains to assess. We distinguish candidate-reported information from supporting evidence rather than presenting every statement as independently verified.
Stay involved through interviews and offers
We use your interview feedback to clarify gaps and keep both sides informed about the work and expectations. We help address offer questions, counteroffers and practical concerns without promising an acceptance. Your team makes the hiring decision and assesses technical capability and site-specific requirements. A shortlist is an output of this work, not the whole service.

What else affects this 5-Axis CNC Machinist hire?
Will a 3-axis machinist grow into 5-axis?
Some will, with support. We name that as a development hire, not a ready hire.
Do you cover Simultaneous 5-Axis Machinist searches in other industries?
Yes, if the work is similar. We describe the material and tolerance differences honestly.
What if no one matches our exact machine?
We widen to people with close kinematics and a strong record of proving programs. We explain the difference in plain terms and let you decide how much transition time is acceptable.
How is the search fee agreed?
The fee is a percentage of first-year base salary, agreed in writing before we start. There is no upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
What should we discuss first?
How do you check simultaneous experience?
We ask about the machine, the part and the strategy. Real experience brings detail about tool axis control and collisions.
Questions before starting a search
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
