The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
A CMM Programmer writes inspection routines in PC-DMIS or metrology programming software from CAD models and prints. The person plans datum strategy, picks probes and styli, designs fixturing and runs the routine on a bridge or gantry machine. Titles vary.
CMM Programmers turn a CAD model and a print into a reliable inspection routine. We find working metrology people who already do that on your kind of parts.
A CMM Programmer writes inspection routines in PC-DMIS or metrology programming software from CAD models and prints. The person plans datum strategy, picks probes and styli, designs fixturing and runs the routine on a bridge or gantry machine. Titles vary. A CMM Operator may only run finished programs. A Metrology Technician may also handle gauges and scanners. We separate programming from running before we search.
Good programmers read ASME Y14.5 fluently. They know why a datum scheme changes the result and how to evaluate position, profile and runout correctly. A course certificate does not prove this. We ask candidates to explain how they would inspect a feature controlled to a tight position relative to a compound datum. People who only follow prior programs often stall at this question.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
CMM rooms often serve second shift because machines run late. We ask which shift fits, how far candidates would commute and whether relocation is plausible for this skill. We ask about current pay and what a move would need, so you know early whether expectations line up.
Fixturing, probes and part handling
Measurement error often comes from fixturing and temperature, not software. Experienced programmers answer with specific examples. Safe work matters too. Heavy parts go onto granite tables, and probes crash into parts when someone is careless.
Fit versus title
Aerospace work demands detailed reports and traceability. Automotive work demands speed and repeat routines. Medical work demands small features and clean records. We match the software platform, the part family and the reporting style your customers expect.
Shift, commute, relocation and current pay
CMM rooms often serve second shift because machines run late. We ask which shift fits, how far candidates would commute and whether relocation is plausible for this skill. We ask about current pay and what a move would need, so you know early whether expectations line up. A programmer who loves one platform may refuse to change, and we raise that early.
Red flags when we screen a programmer
Another is vague talk about datums, as if the machine decides. We also listen for crashes blamed on the software with no mention of verification. A candidate who cannot explain how they proved a routine before running real parts needs more development than your role may allow.
How we judge practical qualification
We ask the candidate to describe one complex part from start to finish. They name the features, the probe plan, the fixture, the problems and the final report. We then ask what changed between the first run and the stable run. A clear answer shows real ownership. We also check comfort with reporting formats that your customers require, since a correct measurement presented badly can still cause a rejected lot.

Direct search
Where are qualified people working now?
Machining suppliers in aerospace, medical and automotive work employ the strongest programmers. We reach them directly, including people who sit in a metrology lab inside a machine shop.
Dedicated metrology labs form another pool. Their people are strong on method and uncertainty but sometimes less familiar with production pace. We check that match with you before presenting anyone.
Some strong people sit inside a machining cell and program the CMM part time. They know the parts but may lack formal training. We test how deep the method goes before we call them ready.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
Fixturing, probes and part handling. We ask how the person holds a thin part without distorting it, how they qualify a probe, and how they handle parts that arrive warm from machining. Fit versus title. A programmer working from a clean model on a modern machine is a different hire from someone using older software and drawings only.

The search
How the search runs?
We ask candidates to explain how they would inspect a feature controlled to a tight position relative to a compound datum. If the platform match is rare, we show you which candidates would need a short ramp and which would not, so you can choose with full information.
Agree the brief
We open with your parts, machines, software and the reports your customers require. We record the platform match as a must or a can learn.
Approach relevant people
Then we call working programmers, run a technical screen on datums and fixturing, and share what we learn. You interview a short list and we help close the offer.

What else affects this CMM Programmer hire?
What if our software differs from the candidate's?
Many programmers move between platforms. We flag the learning curve honestly so you can judge it.
Do candidates need a certificate?
Not necessarily. We screen method and real parts, and we note any credential your customers require.
How do you test a programmer before an interview?
We ask for one complex part told start to finish. We listen for datums, probe choices, fixture ideas and how the routine was proven before real parts were measured.
What if the candidate wants a different machine?
We raise it early. A person who loves one machine brand may still adapt, but we tell you where we hear hesitation.
How is the search fee agreed?
The fee is a percentage of first-year base salary, agreed in writing before we start. There is no upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
The Six-Step Search
What do you get before interviewing?
1. Search CalibrationYou get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone. 2. Market MappingYou get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy.
1. Search Calibration
You get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone.
2. Market Mapping
You get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy. We identify the kinds of plants and teams where people already handle comparable equipment, processes and operating demands.
3. Professional Contact Intelligence
You get a way to reach working people directly. We check professional contact routes and approach candidates discreetly, without making your plant or vacancy public unless you approve.
4. Persistent Personalized Outreach
You get individual conversations about the actual opening. We explain the work, shift and location, ask whether a move makes sense, and follow up without pretending every person is interested.
5. Live Candidate Qualification
You get evidence of fit before spending interview time. We talk through decisions, equipment, results and reasons for moving, then distinguish direct experience from skills that would need support.
6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You get a focused short list with the information behind it. We explain motivation, practical constraints and concerns, support interviews, and keep offer decisions with your hiring team.

What should we discuss first?
Do you place CMM Operators as well?
Yes, though the search differs from programming. Tell us whether the person writes routines or runs them.
What should you know before sending cmm programmer?
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
