The hiring decision

What makes this hire work on your plant floor?

Quality engineers who solve problems instead of filing them.

Quality engineers are in demand and often undervalued. Employers want root cause analysis and process capability skills, but get candidates who mostly handle paperwork.

We read for tools like SPC, FMEA, 8D and measurement systems, plus actual defect reductions.

Before an introduction

What do we check before you interview?

Ask whether the engineer can release product, disposition nonconforming material and approve process changes. Many quality engineers carry responsibility without authority. Clarify who owns the control plan and who closes corrective actions, since the seat's real work follows from those answers.

  • Qualification in practice

We test technical tools, problem-solving examples and customer interaction.

  • Authority and reporting scope

Ask whether the engineer can release product, disposition nonconforming material and approve process changes. Many quality engineers carry responsibility without authority. Clarify who owns the control plan and who closes corrective actions, since the seat's real work follows from those answers.

  • Tools and process specifics

Name the tools in use: SPC, FMEA, control plans, MSA and gauge R&R, 8D, PPAP, CMM programming. Ask which the candidate has run, and which they only reviewed.

  • Evidence to ask for

Ask for a defect reduction with a start figure, the root cause method and how they proved the fix held. Ask for a customer complaint they closed and how long the customer took to accept it. Ask for a gauge study that changed a decision. Ask how they handled a manufacturing engineer who disagreed.

  • Changeovers and shift reality

Many escapes happen at changeover or on night shift.

  • Transferability and hiring mistakes

Skills transfer within an industry and mostly across. Automotive PPAP discipline helps in aerospace but not in food safety. The mistake is hiring paperwork skill, while the plant needs someone who can walk the floor and talk to operators.

  • Customer and supplier interface

Ask which customers the engineer dealt with directly and how they handled a rejected shipment.

  • Metrology and lab

Gauge control and measurement capability are central. Ask which measurement systems the candidate has validated, what calibration schedules they set and what they did when a gauge study failed. Many escapes begin with a bad measurement.

  • Growth path

Quality engineers become quality managers or supplier quality leads. Ask the candidate which they want, and what additional exposure they need. An honest answer helps us place them where they will stay.

  • Typical backgrounds

They come from process engineering, inspection and laboratory roles, and from supplier quality. Candidates who started as inspectors often have the best feel for the floor and need support with statistics.

  • Compensation and growth

Quality engineers weigh pay against exposure to customers, new products and larger systems. Ask what the candidate would like to learn and whether your plant offers it. A plant with only one quality engineer should say so, and say who mentors them.

  • Certifications

ASQ CQE and Six Sigma credentials are common. We confirm whether they are required or simply useful. Experience with your customers' requirements often matters more than any certificate.

  • Mistakes in hiring a quality engineer

Employers ask for certifications and get document handlers. Test the candidate with a real nonconformance: show them a scrap report and ask what they would do first. Candidates who ask to see the part and the process before offering a theory are usually the ones who solve problems.

  • Reference points

Ask for a former manufacturing engineer or supervisor as a reference. Quality engineers who are respected on the floor get good references from it.

  • Core tool fluency

Ask which AIAG tools they have run personally: APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC. For medical, ask about design controls and risk files. Request an example where a gauge study changed an inspection decision. Ask how they judged sample size on a capability study and how they responded when the numbers were poor on a part the customer had already approved.

  • Corrective action quality

Have them describe an 8D or A3 from complaint to closure, including the evidence for effectiveness. Probe how they handled a repeat issue and who in production owned the fix. Ask how they verified a fix after thirty or ninety days, what records they checked and how they decided whether the original problem was truly closed.

  • Release and data habits

Clarify what they can disposition without approval and how they review SPC. Check ASQ CQE status and ask how they teach operators to read a control chart without turning it into a blame exercise. Ask how they explain a control chart to an operator, what actions they set for out of control points and how they handled one who resented being measured.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Tools and process specifics. A quality engineer who has programmed a CMM or run a capability study on a live process has a different level of skill from one who files them. Changeovers and shift reality. Ask how first-piece approval works, who performs it, and how the engineer verified compliance on shifts they did not attend.

The Six-Step Search

What do you get before interviewing?

  1. 1. Search Calibration

You get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone.

  2. 2. Market Mapping

You get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy. We identify the kinds of plants and teams where people already handle comparable equipment, processes and operating demands.

  3. 3. Professional Contact Intelligence

You get a way to reach working people directly. We check professional contact routes and approach candidates discreetly, without making your plant or vacancy public unless you approve.

  4. 4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get individual conversations about the actual opening. We explain the work, shift and location, ask whether a move makes sense, and follow up without pretending every person is interested.

  5. 5. Live Candidate Qualification

You get evidence of fit before spending interview time. We talk through decisions, equipment, results and reasons for moving, then distinguish direct experience from skills that would need support.

  6. 6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get a focused short list with the information behind it. We explain motivation, practical constraints and concerns, support interviews, and keep offer decisions with your hiring team.

What should we discuss first?

Do you recruit ASQ-certified candidates?

We screen for certification when you need it. Employers want root cause analysis and process capability skills, but get candidates who mostly handle paperwork.

What should you know before sending quality engineer?

When do you pay a recruiting fee?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.

How long does it take to see a short list?

We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.

How do you handle counteroffers?

We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.

What replacement terms apply?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What do you not do?

We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
