The hiring decision
What matters for this job
An automotive quality engineer lives between a customer scorecard and a running line. Parts ship just in time, a launch deadline does not move, and an OEM supplier quality engineer expects an eight discipline response that actually identifies the escape point. IATF 16949 and the AIAG core tools are not vocabulary lists here. They are how the engineer decides whether a control plan matches what operators do at the press, the weld cell, or the molding machine. We find quality engineers who have defended PPAP packages, fought through measurement system problems, and earned trust on the floor. The right engineer also understands how launches strain a plant, since new part numbers arrive with unfinished tooling and optimistic schedules, and quality is asked to approve what operations has barely proven.
We ask which levels the candidate submitted, what the customer rejected, and what they changed.
A strong engineer can show how a field failure updated the PFMEA, then the control plan, then the work instruction. We probe for severity and occurrence ranking decisions made under pressure and how detection controls were verified in production.
Before an introduction
What we discuss with candidates
We talk with candidates about jobs they have done, why they are interested and whether the location and shift work for them. We tell you what they have shared and what still needs checking in your interviews.
Measurement system judgment
We look for experience with gauge R&R on attribute and variable gauges, CMM correlation, and the decision to scrap a gauge instead of arguing with the number.
Customer escalation and controlled shipping
Candidates should describe a time the customer imposed containment, how they structured sorting, and what exit criteria were agreed. We value engineers who stay calm and keep the line running while the root cause is still hunted.
Process audits and layered confirmation
IATF expects process audits, product audits, and layered process confirmation. We screen for engineers who built these into daily routines with supervisors instead of running them as a monthly checklist exercise.
Launch readiness and APQP gate judgment
Strong engineers explain how they pushed for containment, negotiated customer expectations, and protected the plant from shipping a hope instead of a capable process.

Where we find people
We source from quality engineers at Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers running processes like yours, whether stamping, machining, injection molding, castings, or electronics assembly. Process knowledge matters, since a quality engineer from a welded assembly plant reads defects differently than one from a plastics interior line.
We also reach customer quality engineers who sit between a plant and an OEM, supplier quality engineers considering a move to the plant side, and launch quality leads. Many of these professionals are quietly open to a better plant and strong leadership, and we approach them directly.
Engineers who have worked at both a plant and a customer site are especially interesting, since they know what an OEM reviewer looks for and what a shop floor can realistically deliver on a Tuesday night shift. We also consider quality technicians who completed engineering degrees and know the floor intimately.
Common hiring mistakes
- PPAP packages that were approved the first time. Someone who has only assembled paperwork differs from someone who walked dimensional layouts, material certs, and capability studies back to root causes on the floor.
- Launch readiness and APQP gate judgment. We ask how the candidate handled a launch where the process was not capable at the gate.
- Measurement system judgment. MSA is where many plants quietly fail.

Questions about Quality Engineer, Automotive searches
What is your fee?
A percentage of the hired engineer's first-year base salary, set in writing before we begin. No upfront fee is charged. We also explain the fee clearly at the start so there are no surprises for your finance team when an offer is accepted.
Do we pay if we do not hire anyone?
No: Payment is due only if you hire someone we introduced. Without a hire, there is no charge.
Is the search confidential?
Yes: We present your plant by type and location, and we reveal your name only after a candidate is interested. This matters when a customer quality contact might hear about turnover.
Can you reach engineers who are not job hunting?
Yes, that is most of our approach. Quality engineers with strong launch records are usually settled and are found through direct conversations, not postings.
What about relocation?
We talk through commuting radius, relocation support, and any hybrid arrangement before we start. Automotive supplier regions often have strong local pools, but specialized process experience sometimes means widening the search.
Would a supplier quality or process engineer work as a quality engineer?
Often yes, if they have used the core tools in anger. A supplier quality engineer knows PPAP well, and a process engineer knows control plans. We flag any gap in MSA or customer-facing experience.

Questions employers ask
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We agree the fee basis and payment terms in writing before starting. Sending the form does not commit you to a search.
How long does it take to see a short list?
It depends on the job, location and people available. We discuss next steps after learning about your opening, rather than promising a date before we know the job.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask why candidates want to move and what could change their minds. We keep that conversation going through interviews and the offer.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not supply high-volume general labor or bill hourly for a standard permanent search. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
