The hiring decision

What makes this hire work on your plant floor?

A QC manager runs the lab that decides whether product ships. In a pharma plant that means out-of-specification investigations that must stand up to an inspector, and in a food plant it means a micro lab that results have to be trusted from.

When you hire a QC Manager, you need someone who has managed analysts, methods and a LIMS through real pressure. We search for lab leaders who can explain how an investigation was run, what the data showed and what they would do differently.

We ask which methods the candidate's lab ran, who validated or transferred them, how system suitability failures were handled and how method changes were controlled. In a chemistry lab that can mean chromatography and dissolution. In a micro lab it can mean enumeration, pathogen testing and environmental monitoring. We confirm the techniques match your lab.

We probe which LIMS the candidate used, whether they configured specifications, sample plans or approval workflows and how they handled a migration or upgrade.

Before an introduction

What do we check before you interview?

A QC lab depends on analysts doing careful work across shifts. We ask about training, competency checks, turnover, overtime and how the candidate protected data integrity when workload rose. Candidates who have investigated a data integrity concern describe it with care.

  • OOS investigations that survived scrutiny

For pharma, we ask for an out-of-specification investigation start to finish: phase one lab review, retest decisions, root cause, impact on batches and the conclusion that went into the file.

  • Micro lab operation in food environments

For food plants, we ask how the candidate managed pathogen testing, positive-and-hold decisions, environmental swabbing results, media quality and analyst competency. We ask what happened after a presumptive positive and who made the release decision under time pressure.

  • Red flags we screen out early

Hands-on distance from the bench is a concern in smaller labs.

Direct search

Where are qualified people working now?

QC managers come from pharmaceutical and biotech quality control labs, food and beverage plant labs, contract testing laboratories and manufacturers with in-house analytical teams. We also approach QC supervisors and senior analysts ready to step into a management role, and lab leaders at contract research or testing firms who manage large staff across many method types.

We match the lab type first. A solid dose lab, a sterile product lab, a dairy micro lab and a snack plant lab have different skills. We also consider the volume of samples, the regulatory body overseeing the site and whether shifts are covered by your lab.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

LIMS experience beyond data entry. Managers who have worked with a LIMS vendor and an IT team explain the compromises plainly, while casual users cannot. OOS investigations that survived scrutiny. We listen for discipline, because an investigation that ends in invalidating a result without evidence is a warning.

  • Red flags we screen out early. We watch for managers who cannot describe an investigation in their own words, who have never faced an inspector or customer audit of their lab, who move between labs frequently with unclear reasons, or who treat retesting as a routine fix.

The search

How the search runs?

We open with a review of your lab: methods, instruments, LIMS, analyst count, shift coverage and the most recent inspection or customer audit findings. We ask what the QC Manager must fix first, such as backlog, investigations or staff retention.

  1. Agree the brief

We open with a review of your lab: methods, instruments, LIMS, analyst count, shift coverage and the most recent inspection or customer audit findings. We ask what the QC Manager must fix first, such as backlog, investigations or staff retention.

  2. Approach relevant people

Then we build a list from the pools above and approach candidates directly, including those currently running a busy lab. Each candidate is screened on methods, investigations and people leadership, and you receive written notes before any interview.

  3. Qualify the work and support the hire

We confirm compensation, relocation and any restrictions early. Our fee is a percentage of first-year base salary, agreed in writing before the search starts, and you pay nothing unless you hire.

  1. 1. Search Calibration

You get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone.

  2. 2. Market Mapping

  3. 3. Professional Contact Intelligence

You get a way to reach working people directly. We check professional contact routes and approach candidates discreetly, without making your plant or vacancy public unless you approve.

What should we discuss first?

When do we pay?

Only when a QC Manager we introduced accepts your offer and starts. If your team interviews and decides against everyone, no fee is owed.

What should you know before sending qc manager?

When do you pay a recruiting fee?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.

How long does it take to see a short list?

We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.

How do you handle counteroffers?

We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.

What replacement terms apply?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What do you not do?

We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
