The hiring decision

What matters for this job

Quality directors with multi-site systems and customer credibility.

Directors of quality carry corporate quality systems and customer relationships. The pool is small, and customers or regulators can shape what the right profile looks like.

We check multi-site experience, regulatory exposure and how they handled recalls or major escapes.

Before an introduction

What we discuss with candidates

We talk with candidates about jobs they have done, why they are interested and whether the location and shift work for them. We tell you what they have shared and what still needs checking in your interviews.

  • Qualification in practice

We test strategy, systems design, customer-facing experience and team building.

  • Authority and reporting responsibilities

A director of quality should have a path to the CEO or board for serious issues. Ask whether the job reports to operations, the CEO or a regulatory function, how many sites it covers and whether the director can approve a recall decision. Without independence, the role becomes administration.

  • Systems and audit specifics

Ask about the portfolio of certifications across sites, who owns the quality manual and how corporate audits are scheduled. Ask for the largest customer or regulator audit the candidate led, and the outcome.

  • Examples to ask for

Ask for a recall or major escape they managed: detection, containment, communication and corrective action. Ask for corporate cost of poor quality trends. Ask how many plant quality managers they hired and how many remain. Ask for a time they overruled a plant manager and how it was resolved.

  • Customer and regulator exposure

Customers will interview this person. Ask which customers they have faced directly, and whether they have handled a supplier-of-record audit in the candidate's last role. Regulated products add inspection history: the number of observations, and the response.

  • Transferability and hiring mistakes

Strategic quality leaders cross industries with difficulty because standards and customer expectations differ sharply. Be clear which problem is real.

  • Corporate systems and tools

Many directors implement a common quality system across sites: document control, nonconformance tracking, supplier portals. Ask what they selected, how long adoption took and which plants resisted. Systems that sit unused are common, and a candid answer is more useful than a polished one.

  • Relationship with operations

A quality director who becomes the police loses influence; one who becomes a friend loses independence. Ask for an example where they overruled a plant manager, and one where they compromised. The pattern of both reveals judgment.

  • Succession and bench

Ask how many of the candidate's quality managers have been promoted or left, and whether any plant lacks a ready successor. Weak bench strength in quality is a regulatory and customer risk that often surfaces in audits.

  • Budget and headcount

Directors manage budgets for labs, equipment and audits. Ask what the candidate cut, what they refused to cut and how they justified spending after an escape. We note candidates who connected quality spend to customer loss in dollar terms.

  • Compensation and equity

Quality directors at sponsor-backed companies often receive equity. Ask about plan structure and expectations.

  • Typical backgrounds

Directors come from plant quality management, corporate quality or regulatory roles. Those from corporate roles bring systems knowledge; those from plants bring credibility. We match to your gap.

  • Mistakes in hiring a director of quality

The most costly mistake is hiring a director who cannot hold the line against a strong operations head. Another is hiring someone whose experience is purely audits. Ask for a story where the candidate lost an argument and later turned out to be right, and how they handled the aftermath.

  • Multi-site structure

Ask how quality reports are organized across sites, who the site quality managers answer to, and how the candidate handled a weak site. Probe whether corporate standards were adopted or only imposed. Ask how they gave a site leader bad news and what they did when the plant manager disagreed with a corporate finding.

  • Certification portfolio

Request the certification history they stewarded across plants, including transfers, responsibilities changes and surveillance findings. Ask how they prepared a site that was about to be audited and what they changed afterward. Ask how they managed a responsibilities change at a site and which findings repeated across plants, since repeats point to systems rather than individuals.

  • Cost of poor quality

Have them explain how they tracked scrap, rework and customer returns into a cost view finance accepted. Ask which project they chose first and who sponsored it. The answer shows influence beyond the quality department. Ask how they sized a program, which data they pulled from each site and how they kept the data trusted by plant managers instead of treating it as a corporate scoreboard.

Common hiring mistakes

  • Systems and audit specifics. Multi-site consistency is the core skill: a director who raised one plant's score while another fell has not done the job.
  • Transferability and hiring mistakes. The mistake is hiring a charismatic leader with a thin systems background, or a systems expert who cannot influence plant managers.
  • Compensation and equity. A candidate who sees quality as a protected function wants to know that the incentive does not reward shipping marginal product.
