What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Director of Quality, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $94,620 | $121,440 | $156,330 |
| May 2025 | $98,160 | $126,060 | $161,880 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about certification portfolio?
Request the certification history they stewarded across plants, including transfers, scope changes and surveillance findings. Ask how they prepared a site that was about to be audited and what they changed afterward. Ask how they managed a scope change at a site and which findings repeated across plants, since repeats point to systems rather than individuals.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What does this data mean for your opening?
Manufacturing Headhunters examines the national labor statistics for Industrial Production Managers (SOC 11-3051) to provide context for Director of Quality roles. The national median wage is $126,060, which reflects an increase of $4,620 from the $121,440 observed in May 2024. The middleBandWidth of $63,720 suggests a substantial range between the P25 ($98,160) and P75 ($161,880).
Specific manufacturing sectors command premiums, with Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reporting a median of $155,730 and Iron and Steel Mills at $145,280.
Regional data reveals different benchmarks for key employment centers. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim region reports a median of $128,540 and a middleBandWidth of $63,060. The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin area shows a higher median of $129,840 and a middleBandWidth of $61,100. Chicago holds a locationQuotient of 1.24 for these management roles, confirming that it is a central hub for industrial oversight talent. These metropolitan metrics are critical for benchmarking quality leadership compensation against national trends.
The broad SOC categorization used by the BLS means that these figures encapsulate a wider array of production and facility management roles. A Director of Quality overseeing multi-site certifications or cost reduction initiatives will often command a package that this baseline data cannot fully map due to the exclusion of executive-level benefits. Recruitment of this caliber requires looking at the provided industry-specific data rows to identify sectors where production leaders are valued at the higher end of the spectrum. The provided statistics should be treated as a foundation for planning.
