The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
A supplier quality manager is hired when a supplier problem has already cost you a line stoppage, and the real task is making sure the next one is caught at the source. When you hire a Supplier Quality Manager, you need someone who has managed a real supplier base, enforced scorecards, and made hard resourcing calls with purchasing and engineering. We search for leaders who have run a supplier quality team and can describe exactly which supplier they exited and why.
We ask how many suppliers the candidate was responsible for, which were critical, what commodities they covered and where those suppliers sat geographically. We confirm the scale and complexity match your supply chain.
Many companies publish scorecards that nobody reads. We ask what metrics the candidate used, how quarterly reviews were run, what happened to suppliers at the bottom and whether the scorecard influenced awards of new business.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
Our recruiter conversations establish what the candidate says they personally handled, how they made decisions and why they would consider this opening. The brief identifies candidate-reported information, available supporting evidence and unresolved questions. Your team still assesses technical performance, site-specific safety requirements and the authority the person will need.
Resourcing and exit decisions
Moving business away from a supplier is expensive and political. We ask for a case where the candidate recommended resourcing, how the case was built, who disagreed and what happened afterward. We also ask when they chose to keep a poor supplier and why.
Leading SQEs and field presence
A manager sets the standards for engineers in the field. We ask how the candidate assigned supplier territories, coached engineers through audits and PPAP reviews, handled travel demands and developed people who later advanced. Managers who still understand audit detail command respect.
Partnership with purchasing and engineering
Supplier quality only works if buyers and design engineers respect it. We ask how the candidate handled a purchasing leader who pressed for lower price from a risky supplier, and how they engaged engineering on drawing clarity and tolerance issues that were really the cause of supplier defects.
Red flags we screen out early
Excessive reliance on third-party audits without follow-up is another concern.

Direct search
Where are qualified people working now?
Supplier quality managers come from automotive, aerospace and medical device OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers with large purchased-content bases, and manufacturers with complex supply chains. We approach supplier quality engineer leads who are ready to step into management, supplier development leaders and purchasing quality managers at peer plants.
We match the nature of your supply base. A manufacturer relying on castings and machined components needs a different background than one buying electronic assemblies or packaging materials. We also consider whether your suppliers are domestic, overseas or both, and how much travel the manager will tolerate.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
- The size and shape of the supplier base they managed. Managing a few castings houses is a different job from managing a long tail of purchased components across regions.
- Scorecards that actually changed supplier behavior. Candidates who tied performance to sourcing decisions have more credibility than those who only reported numbers.
- Red flags we screen out early. We watch for managers who describe only audits and no outcomes, who cannot name a supplier they helped improve, who blame purchasing for every problem, or who have never managed a containment event at a supplier site.
Executive-search discipline, on every assignment
What do you get from the Six-Step Search?
Plant leaders, engineers and skilled technicians receive the same care in defining the work, researching relevant backgrounds and understanding the individual. Pulling a list and sending messages is not the hard part. The value is doing the research and qualification well enough to support a sound hiring decision.
Calibrate the work and the decision
We start with the operating problem, what the hire must improve and the decisions they will own. We agree what experience matters, who supports the role and what you can realistically offer. A maintenance leader inheriting reactive breakdowns needs a different brief from one building a reliability program.
Research relevant plants and people
We research manufacturing environments where people have handled comparable work. Process, equipment and decision authority matter more than a matching title. We look for relevant professionals, including people who are not applying, rather than treating an exported list as a completed search.
Make respectful, targeted contact
We explain why the work may be relevant and invite a conversation without pressure. We agree what information may be shared on a confidential search. Contact is the start of qualification, not evidence that someone wants the job or fits it.
Discuss the work they personally performed
Our conversations separate an individual's decisions and responsibilities from the team's results. We explore judgment under pressure, reasons for considering a move and practical expectations. For technicians, that includes equipment background, shift, commute and the support available. Candidate accounts are identified as such; a conversation is not a technical certification.
Write down fit, gaps and open questions
You receive a written candidate brief connecting the person's background to your operating problem. It explains motivation and practical fit, the gaps we have identified and what remains to assess. We distinguish candidate-reported information from supporting evidence rather than presenting every statement as independently verified.
Stay involved through interviews and offers
We use your interview feedback to clarify gaps and keep both sides informed about the work and expectations. We help address offer questions, counteroffers and practical concerns without promising an acceptance. Your team makes the hiring decision and assesses technical capability and site-specific requirements. A shortlist is an output of this work, not the whole service.

What else affects this Supplier Quality Manager hire?
How are fees set for a Supplier Quality Manager search?
We charge a percentage of the hired manager's first-year base salary, agreed in writing before the search starts. Bonus and relocation are not part of the basis.
Is the search confidential?
Yes: We can describe your business generally while we qualify a candidate, and we never share supplier names, scorecards or sourcing plans. Candidates are asked to respect the same discretion.
Can you find supplier quality leaders who are not looking?
Yes: Strong supplier quality managers are usually busy fixing a supplier issue. We approach them directly and discuss your supply base so they can judge the opportunity.
Do supplier quality managers relocate?
Many do, particularly when travel is already heavy. We ask early about home base, how much travel they will accept and whether remote work with periodic plant visits would suit them.
Do you search under titles like Director of Supplier Quality?
Yes: Director of Supplier Quality and Supplier Quality Manager often describe similar roles, so we search across both and screen on supplier base size and team leadership. Supplier quality only works if buyers and design engineers respect it.

What should we discuss first?
When do we owe the fee?
Only if a Supplier Quality Manager we presented accepts your offer and starts. If you do not hire, you owe nothing.
Questions before starting a search
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
