The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
Supplier quality engineers who travel, audit and hold suppliers to standard.
Supplier quality needs technical credibility and the confidence to say no to a supplier. Travel is heavy and the pool is smaller than general quality.
We read for audits led, supplier development wins and PPAP experience.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
Ask for a supplier they developed from poor to acceptable performance with numbers and the actions taken. Ask for a PPAP rejection and how it was resolved. Ask for a line-down event caused by a supplier and what they did.
Qualification in practice
We test audit skills, technical knowledge and negotiation.
Authority and reporting scope
Ask whether the engineer can place a supplier on controlled shipping, require a corrective action and reject a source. Clarify who decides when a supplier is disqualified and who owns the commercial relationship.
Supplier and process specifics
Name the commodities: castings, forgings, stampings, machined parts, electronics, resins, chemicals. Ask for the supplier base size, the share overseas and the travel schedule. Domestic and offshore supplier management are different jobs.
Evidence to ask for
Ask for a supplier they developed from poor to acceptable performance with numbers and the actions taken. Ask for a PPAP rejection and how it was resolved. Ask for a line-down event caused by a supplier and what they did. Ask how they audited process, not just documents.
Travel and shift reality
Travel is often one week in three or more. Ask the candidate about the longest travel stretch they accepted and the way they handle it. Plant-based supplier quality engineers also respond to urgent line-down problems at night.
Transferability and hiring mistakes
Supplier quality skill transfers across commodities slowly. The common mistake is hiring a pure auditor when the plant needs someone who can solve process problems at the supplier. Ask what they did when a supplier was reluctant to change.
Escalation and commercial use
The best supplier quality engineers know when to escalate to purchasing or executives. Ask how the candidate handled a supplier who ignored corrective actions and whether they had support from purchasing. Without use, supplier quality becomes a letter-writing job.
Incoming inspection and containment
Ask how the candidate contained a bad lot, who sorted it, how costs were recovered and how they prevented recurrence. Many plants spend heavily on sorting that suppliers should have paid for.
Overseas suppliers
If your base is overseas, ask about time zones, language and local audits.
Growth path
Supplier quality can lead to supplier quality management or to sourcing. Ask where the candidate hopes to go, and be clear about what the plant can offer.
Compensation and travel
Pay for supplier quality reflects the travel burden. Candidates compare per-diem policies, weekend travel and flexibility. Describe the typical month honestly.
Typical backgrounds
Supplier quality engineers come from process engineering, inspection and purchasing. Those with a process background solve problems at the supplier; those from purchasing negotiate better. Tell us which skill your plant is missing.
Interview structure
Give the candidate a real supplier scorecard with a declining trend and ask them to plan the next ninety days. Look for visits, data requests, containment decisions and a clear point at which they would escalate. Ask the purchasing lead to join one conversation, since the relationship between supplier quality and purchasing decides how much use the engineer will actually have.
Mistakes in hiring a supplier quality engineer
Employers hire for audit skill and then discover the plant needed problem solving at the supplier. Or they hire someone who loves travel and lacks technical depth. Decide which matters more. A useful screen is to hand the candidate a supplier corrective action report with a weak root cause and ask how they would respond.
Reference points
Speak with a supplier the candidate worked with if possible. Suppliers can tell you quickly whether the person was fair, firm and technically credible.
PPAP approvals
Ask which PPAP levels they have approved, what they rejected and how they communicated it to the supplier. Probe how they judged dimensional results, material certifications and process flow before signing. Ask how they reviewed a first article and which characteristics they measured themselves instead of trusting the supplier's report.
Supplier audits
Request a supplier audit they conducted, including the checklist, the findings and how corrective action was tracked. Ask how they handled a supplier who agreed in the meeting and did nothing afterward. Ask how they judged readiness for a supplier to leave controlled shipping, who confirmed the improvement and how they kept the buyer informed throughout.
Travel and commodity fit
Confirm travel tolerance in plain terms, including international trips if relevant. Match the commodity to their history, whether castings, machined parts or electronics, and check ASQ CSQP status where the role values it. Ask how they prepare for a trip, what they pack into an audit plan and how they follow up with a supplier whose floor looked different from their paperwork, and what they documented.

1. Search Calibration
You get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone.
2. Market Mapping
You get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy. We identify the kinds of plants and teams where people already handle comparable equipment, processes and operating demands.
3. Professional Contact Intelligence
You get a way to reach working people directly. We check professional contact routes and approach candidates discreetly, without making your plant or vacancy public unless you approve.
4. Persistent Personalized Outreach
You get individual conversations about the actual opening. We explain the work, shift and location, ask whether a move makes sense, and follow up without pretending every person is interested.
5. Live Candidate Qualification
You get evidence of fit before spending interview time. We talk through decisions, equipment, results and reasons for moving, then distinguish direct experience from skills that would need support.
6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You get a focused short list with the information behind it. We explain motivation, practical constraints and concerns, support interviews, and keep offer decisions with your hiring team.
What should we discuss first?
How much travel is typical?
We confirm with you and the candidate. They work in OEMs and large suppliers.
What should you know before sending supplier quality engineer?
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
