The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
NDT Technicians find flaws without damaging parts. We find working Level II technicians whose methods, certifications and shop settings match yours.
Phased array ultrasonic work needs more skill than conventional. A technician strong in penetrant and magnetic particle work may have little time in radiography.
Level II certification under SNT-TC-1A or NAS 410 is issued by the employer, based on training, hours and exams in each method. That is why the certificate does not always transfer. A new employer may need to recertify the person. We ask for method-specific hours and ask the candidate to describe a real indication and how they evaluated it. We tell you which certifications are transferable and which need rework.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
Our recruiter conversations establish what the candidate says they personally handled, how they made decisions and why they would consider this opening. The brief identifies candidate-reported information, available supporting evidence and unresolved questions. Your team still assesses technical performance, site-specific safety requirements and the authority the person will need.
Aerospace and accredited work
Aerospace shops under NADCAP expect written procedures, strict records and calibrated equipment. People who have worked in such shops respect the discipline. Industrial inspection of weld seams or castings can be looser.
Safe work and radiation
Radiographic work involves ionizing radiation and requires proper licensing and dosimetry. Other methods involve chemicals, high voltage and field conditions. We ask about safety training, exposure records where relevant, and field behavior. A person who cuts corners in testing will eventually miss a defect.
Fit, travel, shift and current pay
NDT can be lab work on day shift or field work with travel and long hours. We confirm which you offer, along with commute and relocation. We also discuss current pay and the reasons someone would move, so the conversation is realistic. Military nondestructive inspection veterans bring discipline, but we confirm how their experience translates to commercial certifications.
Red flags when we screen a technician
A red flag is a person who cannot explain what an indication looked like on a real part. Another is loose handling of records or calibration of equipment. We also listen for inflated method claims, such as phased array experience that turns out to be an observation day. A candidate who admits limits is easier to trust than one who claims every method.
How we judge practical qualification
We ask for one real inspection from setup to report. The candidate names the part, the method, the standard, the technique and the acceptance criteria. Then we ask what they did when the signal was unclear. Good technicians describe a second method or a second opinion. We also confirm how they document procedure deviations.
Fit versus title
An NDT Inspector in a foundry looks at castings in bulk. A technician in an aerospace lab works to tightly written procedures on high value parts. A field technician moves from site to site with a truck of equipment. The title is the same. The daily life is not. We ask about setting, travel and part type so the candidate you meet has actually done similar work.

Direct search
Where are qualified people working now?
Aerospace NDT labs hold some of the most disciplined technicians. We approach them directly, along with technicians in plants that test their own products.
Third-party inspection staff and military nondestructive inspection veterans are other pools. We screen for method depth and record habits, since breadth alone is not enough.
Technicians who started in a plant that tests its own castings or forgings are another pool. They know the product well. We check that their certification history is documented enough for your program.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
- Methods and what each one finds. Ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, penetrant and eddy current testing each find different flaws.
- Methods and what each one finds. We find out which methods you actually use daily, because an NDT Inspector title does not tell us.
- Aerospace and accredited work. We match your audit environment so the person does not struggle with paperwork rigor.
Executive-search discipline, on every assignment
What do you get from the Six-Step Search?
Plant leaders, engineers and skilled technicians receive the same care in defining the work, researching relevant backgrounds and understanding the individual. Pulling a list and sending messages is not the hard part. The value is doing the research and qualification well enough to support a sound hiring decision.
Calibrate the work and the decision
We start with the operating problem, what the hire must improve and the decisions they will own. We agree what experience matters, who supports the role and what you can realistically offer. A maintenance leader inheriting reactive breakdowns needs a different brief from one building a reliability program.
Research relevant plants and people
We research manufacturing environments where people have handled comparable work. Process, equipment and decision authority matter more than a matching title. We look for relevant professionals, including people who are not applying, rather than treating an exported list as a completed search.
Make respectful, targeted contact
We explain why the work may be relevant and invite a conversation without pressure. We agree what information may be shared on a confidential search. Contact is the start of qualification, not evidence that someone wants the job or fits it.
Discuss the work they personally performed
Our conversations separate an individual's decisions and responsibilities from the team's results. We explore judgment under pressure, reasons for considering a move and practical expectations. For technicians, that includes equipment background, shift, commute and the support available. Candidate accounts are identified as such; a conversation is not a technical certification.
Write down fit, gaps and open questions
You receive a written candidate brief connecting the person's background to your operating problem. It explains motivation and practical fit, the gaps we have identified and what remains to assess. We distinguish candidate-reported information from supporting evidence rather than presenting every statement as independently verified.
Stay involved through interviews and offers
We use your interview feedback to clarify gaps and keep both sides informed about the work and expectations. We help address offer questions, counteroffers and practical concerns without promising an acceptance. Your team makes the hiring decision and assesses technical capability and site-specific requirements. A shortlist is an output of this work, not the whole service.

What else affects this NDT Technician hire?
Do you search for a single method?
Yes: We can focus on one method or a mix based on your work. We find out which methods you actually use daily, because an NDT Inspector title does not tell us.
Do you cover field NDT?
Yes, when travel is part of the role we screen for it. Other methods involve chemicals, high voltage and field conditions.
What if the candidate holds Level II in different methods than we need?
We tell you the overlap. Some methods transfer well in practice even when the formal certificate must be reissued.
Do you screen for equipment brands?
We ask about equipment, but method skill matters more. We flag any brand gap that would slow a start.
How is the search fee agreed?
The fee is a percentage of first-year base salary, agreed in writing before we start. There is no upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
What should we discuss first?
Will a candidate's Level II carry over?
Often it must be reissued by the new employer. We tell you how much retraining is likely.
Questions before starting a search
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
