What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Controls Engineer, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $87,590 | $111,910 | $141,630 |
| May 2025 | $92,830 | $120,630 | $152,950 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
Why fit is difficult?
Automation talent is contested by every industry. PLC platforms, robotics, vision and networking differ, and employers often need a specific stack. The best engineers are in demand and rarely respond to cold approaches.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Controls Engineer?
The median annual wage for Electrical Engineers in the United States was $120,630 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $92,830 and $152,950. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $76,550. 90% earned less than $184,300.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Is this the pay for a Controls Engineer at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 198,750 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
Controls Engineers are critical to the uptime and efficiency of modern manufacturing, working with platforms like integrated PLC engineering software or modular PLCs. BLS classifies this role under Electrical Engineers (SOC 17-2071). The national median wage is $120,630 per year, which is a median change of $8720 over the $111,910 reported in May 2024.
The middle band width is $60,120, ranging from a P25 of $92,830 to a P75 of $152,950. This indicates a very competitive market where experience in motion and safety PLC programming commands a significant premium.
National manufacturing industry medians confirm the high value of these skills. Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing shows a median of $141,160. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports a median of $137,540. Hiring managers should note that BLS data omits essential pay components like travel pay for integrators and production-based bonuses, which are critical in competitive hiring. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that the gap between the P25 and P75 is fueled by the demand for engineers who can jump between different HMI and SCADA environments with little oversight. These national manufacturing figures provide a strong anchor for salary discussions for lead controls roles.
Regional hubs highlight the demand for these skills in high-density areas. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA, metro shows a median of $139,780, reflecting a median change of $4880. New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ, reports a median of $128,340 with a median change of $1180. These figures suggest that controls engineering is highly valued in both regions. The location quotient in Los Angeles is 1.12, which is significantly lower than the concentration seen in some other manufacturing sectors but still reflective of an active market. Managers should use these medians to assess local competitiveness, ensuring they account for the technical demand of the specific PLC platform used in their plant rather than solely relying on the broader national category.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Why is the P75 salary for controls engineers so high?
The $152,950 P75 figure reflects the high premium placed on expert-level integration skills. Engineers capable of full-scale plant automation reside at this end of the band.
Is the $8720 median change indicative of a shortage?
The significant year-over-year median change indicates strong demand and upward pressure on salaries for electrical and controls engineering roles.
Are these salary figures inclusive of the frequent travel often required?
No, base pay for controls engineers usually excludes the additional pay or daily allowances provided for travel to OEM or integrator sites.
