What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Robotics Engineer, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about process knowledge around the arm?

A welding robot, a dispensing robot and a pick and place robot demand different skills. We match to your process: arc welding with seam tracking, spot welding with tip dress, painting, machine tending with part presentation, or end of line packaging.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Robotics Engineer?

The median annual wage for Engineers, All Other in the United States was $122,930 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $90,970 and $158,090. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $66,810. 90% earned less than $189,950.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Robotics Engineer at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 154,070 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The middle-band width, measured as the P75 value of $158,090 minus the P25 value of $90,970, is $67,120. For Robotics Engineer in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

The Robotics Engineer role is mapped to the broader BLS Engineers, All Other category, SOC 17-2199. Because the BLS does not isolate robotics-specific manufacturing salaries, this data encompasses a wide range of engineering tasks. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that actual shop-floor work, such as industrial robot controllers or articulated robot controllers cell design and integration, is often compensated differently than generalized design roles. For Robotics Engineer in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $122,930; the May 2024 median is $117,750. Their arithmetic difference is $5,180. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. For Robotics Engineer in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

For Robotics Engineer in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $90,970 to $158,090 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them.

The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV metro reports a median of $151,340, a change of -$11,270 from the prior median. Conversely, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA area shows a median of $125,060, a change of $3,060. The location quotient for Washington is 2.97, meaning there is a high concentration of these roles relative to other areas, while Los Angeles stands at 1.21. It is critical to differentiate between employment concentration and available candidate supply or local pay levels. For Robotics Engineer in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $122,930; the May 2024 median is $117,750. Their arithmetic difference is $5,180. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause.

Industry-level national data helps define the market for skilled talent, despite the limitation that these are sectoral averages. Audio and Video Equipment Manufacturing reports a median of $164,720, followed by Sawmills and Wood Preservation at $149,250 and Beverage Manufacturing at $136,090. These figures demonstrate that robotics integration is highly valued across diverse production environments. Because these figures are topcoded at the sector level, they should serve as guideposts for competitive pay rather than precise individual job offers. Maintaining consistent internal pay structures is vital while considering these national benchmarks.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

The national median is $122,930, while the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria area median is $151,340. For Robotics Engineer in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $90,970 to $158,090 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity.

Does the $67,120 middle-band width indicate standard pay progression?

The middle-band width represents the statistical spread between the P25 and P75 percentiles for this occupation. It does not dictate individual progression but provides a range for balancing internal equity and external market competition.

What is the difference between the national median and the Washington area median?

The national median is $122,930, while the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria area median is $151,340. For Robotics Engineer in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $90,970 to $158,090 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them.

Why does the BLS provide sector-level data instead of specific robotics wages?

The BLS classifies this role within a broader engineering occupation to maintain data consistency across many industries. This means specific job duties, such as robotics integration, are aggregated rather than individually isolated for reporting purposes.
