What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Field Service Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $95,910 | $138,060 | $201,490 |
| May 2025 | $100,360 | $148,270 | $207,340 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about the authority you are offering?
Settle service management rather than personal travel to every breakdown before outreach begins. We put the difference around service management rather than personal travel to every breakdown in front of you so the interview tests missing experience rather than assuming it is already there.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Field Service Manager?
The median annual wage for Sales Managers in the United States was $148,270 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $100,360 and $207,340. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $73,170. 90% earned less than $290,540.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Is this the pay for a Field Service Manager at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 637,080 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The national median for Field Service Managers, mapped to the broader Sales Managers SOC 11-2022, is $148,270. This reflects a $10,210 change from the May 2024 median of $138,060. The middle-band width of $106,980 exists between the P25 of $100,360 and the P75 of $207,340, covering 637,080 employees in the occupation.
These values exclude field-based travel premiums and shift-based service bonuses, which often represent the actual take-home difference for management in high-availability environments.
New York-Newark-Jersey City shows a median of $215,150, whereas Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim shows a median of $132,330. The medianChange was $3,480 for New York and $5,540 for Los Angeles. These are annualized figures, not hourly wages. Manufacturing Headhunters advises that these regional differences represent the high-cost environments of these two hubs. They should not be read as standardized rates for service management across the entire country.
National industry rows indicate stronger wage profiles in Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing at $215,500, Semiconductors at $200,050, and Pharmaceuticals at $194,160. These provide better benchmarks for industrial service roles than the general occupation median. These national figures aggregate all service-facing sales management and should not be mistaken for local labor cost data. Use these to frame the potential salary ceiling within high-complexity technical sectors.
Screening for this position requires an eye for escalation management, ensuring that technicians are deployed effectively based on the nature of the technical failure. This role focuses on service team management rather than the individual performing repairs. Because the BLS mapping is broad, use the middle-band width only as a starting point. The location quotient is an employment indicator that confirms high concentration of these roles in top hubs, but it does not measure local salary competition or candidate quality.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Does this reflect the pay for technicians?
No, this role is for service management and falls under Sales Managers. Technicians typically fall under distinct service-oriented SOC codes.
What is the best way to use the $106,980 band?
Apply this as a broad reference range for total base compensation. Refine the specific offer based on the candidate's history of managing complex field escalations.
Why is the median higher in some industries?
Complex manufacturing sectors like semiconductors require high-level management for post-sale service, leading to higher reported medians in those specific industry NAICS codes.
