What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For First Article Inspector, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $38,740 | $47,460 | $59,970 |
| May 2025 | $39,890 | $48,570 | $61,440 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.
- Supervisor occupation: Production Supervisor pay (SOC 51-1011)
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about the authority you are offering?
Settle first-article planning and evidence rather than only final visual inspection before outreach begins. We put the difference around first-article planning and evidence rather than only final visual inspection in front of you so the interview tests missing experience rather than assuming it is already there.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a First Article Inspector?
The median annual wage for Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers in the United States was $48,570 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $39,890 and $61,440.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $35,510. 90% earned less than $77,860.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a First Article Inspector at a plant?
First Article Inspector is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 597,370 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The First Article Inspector falls under the Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers classification. Total national employment is 597370. The national median salary is $48570, which is an increase of 1110 over the May 2024 median of $47460. The middleBandWidth is 21550, defined by a P25 of $39890 and a P75 of $61440.
These values capture the varied technical requirements of inspection tasks, though Manufacturing Headhunters notes that BLS methodology omits variable pay components like production bonuses or shift premiums.
Comparing specific manufacturing industries, Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing leads with a national median of $74450, followed by Motor Vehicle Manufacturing at $73310 and Ship and Boat Building at $64560. These industry rows indicate that employers in capital-intensive sectors prioritize higher-skilled inspection personnel. In the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro, the median is $48230, while the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro reports $51560. The Chicago metro has a location quotient of 1.33, signifying a heavy manufacturing presence, whereas Los Angeles sits at 0.94.
The provided data is direct for the occupation but remains limited regarding plant-specific roles like First Article planning. The middleBandWidth of 21550 suggests that professional capability and experience significantly influence pay outcomes for these roles. Because BLS records include all inspection staff, the range is wide, reflecting tasks from basic visual checks to complex first-article validation. Hiring managers should focus on matching specific drawing interpretation and documentation skills to the relevant P75 or P90 tiers, as the national P90 of $77860 demonstrates that highly specialized inspectors command significantly higher pay. No local or company-specific wage offers are included here.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Does the Aerospace industry median reflect the actual wage for an inspector?
The industry median of $74450 reflects the national average for the broader inspection category within that sector. It does not indicate the specific wage for a First Article Inspector, which is part of that total pool.
Why is there such a large difference between the P25 and P75 figures?
The middleBandWidth of 21550 occurs because the SOC 51-9061 category includes various experience and skill levels. This range represents the middle 50% of the national inspection workforce.
What does the location quotient tell me about hiring in Chicago?
The location quotient of 1.33 indicates a higher concentration of inspector jobs in Chicago compared to the national average. It does not dictate pay rates or the availability of specific talent for first-article work.
