What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$38,740$47,460$59,970
May 2025$39,890$48,570$61,440

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What a CWI does in a shop?

A Certified Welding Inspector checks that welds meet the governing code. The person reviews welding procedure specifications and procedure qualification records, watches fit-up, verifies welder qualifications, performs visual inspection and signs off reports. In some shops the title is Welding QC Inspector. In others, a Weld Inspector may only do final visual checks.

We define whether you need procedure review as well.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)?

The median annual wage for Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers in the United States was $48,570 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $39,890 and $61,440. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $35,510. 90% earned less than $77,860.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Is this the pay for a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) at a plant?

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) role is captured under the broad SOC 51-9061 occupation. As of May 2025, the national median for this occupation is $48,570, up $1,110 from the $47,460 recorded in May 2024. The middle-band width is $21,550. For Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation.

The published middle interval is $39,890 to $61,440 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. Because BLS does not isolate certified welding experts, the median is likely conservative for actual CWI roles, which require higher levels of code knowledge and professional experience.

Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reflects a median of $74,450, while Motor Vehicle Manufacturing is $73,310. Ship and Boat Building sits at $64,560. These roles prioritize specialized inspection, which is more aligned with CWI responsibilities than the general occupation average. For Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

The two metros with highest employment concentration illustrate regional market conditions. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA reflects a median of $51,560 with a location quotient of 0.94. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that while these metros show high demand for inspectors generally, the specific value of a CWI is dictated by the specific welding codes required by the employer, such as AWS D1.1 or ASME. For Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Why does the CWI median appear lower than industry averages?

The CWI occupation is grouped with all types of testers and samplers. The higher industry averages reflect the specialized nature of technical manufacturing which CWI roles typically perform.

Does the BLS data account for the AWS CWI certification?

No, the BLS system does not distinguish between certified and non-certified inspectors. A CWI will typically earn compensation at the top end of the middle-band or higher.

Is the regional location quotient a useful metric for CWI availability?

It indicates a high concentration of inspection roles in the region, which is helpful for understanding job market density. It does not specifically track the supply of CWI-certified personnel.
