What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For FSQA Director, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $94,620 | $121,440 | $156,330 |
| May 2025 | $98,160 | $126,060 | $161,880 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about regulatory posture and credibility?
We check how they dealt with USDA and FDA, whether they have managed inspection outcomes at multiple locations and how they approached FSMA preventive control updates. Credentials such as PCQI, HACCP and scheme-specific training matter, but the director's reputation with regulators and customers matters more.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a FSQA Director?
The median annual wage for Industrial Production Managers in the United States was $126,060 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $98,160 and $161,880. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $78,000. 90% earned less than $205,520.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a FSQA Director at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 246,250 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The FSQA Director role, when mapped for salary purposes, utilizes the 11-3051 Industrial Production Managers category. The national median for this occupation is $126,060 as of May 2025, which reflects a 4,620 shift from the prior median. The middleBandWidth is 63,720, indicating that pay for this category varies significantly between the 98,160 and 161,880 percentiles.
This variance is expected given that the occupational category covers production leadership across all manufacturing types, including those that do not involve the complex multi-plant programs and crisis management duties typical for an FSQA Director.
National industry-specific rows, such as Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing at $155,730 and Iron and Steel Mills and Ferroalloy Manufacturing at $145,280, highlight sectoral differences in management compensation. These values are not specific to the FSQA Director title and do not include the value of intangible benefits or specific technical requirements like managing retailer audits or regulatory recalls. BLS data remains focused on broader industrial production management and ignores the specific seniority and crisis-response profile of a director-level safety expert.
In the top employment hubs, Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN shows a median of $129,840, and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA reports $128,540. The location quotients are 1.24 and 0.92, respectively, describing the concentration of production-related managers. Manufacturing Headhunters highlights that while these hubs show significant hiring activity, the salary numbers do not track the specific premiums associated with high-level FSQA oversight or multi-plant responsibility. The data serves as a useful benchmark for base production leadership, yet it does not fully encapsulate the specific market value for director-level food safety professionals. Managers should utilize these figures as a starting point while accounting for the technical and leadership requirements of the director level.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Does this data reflect the responsibilities of a director-level role?
The data follows the Industrial Production Managers occupation, which is a broad category. It does not specifically differentiate between manager and director levels of oversight.
What is the middle band width for this occupation?
The middleBandWidth is 63,720, representing the range between the p25 of 98,160 and the p75 of 161,880. This reflects the broad range of salaries within production management.
Is the median change consistent with historical trends?
The median salary changed by 4,620 between May 2024 and May 2025. This reflects a broad upward trend for production managers rather than a change specific to FSQA director roles.
