What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operator, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operator in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$35,080$38,820$47,550
May 2025$36,030$40,110$49,010

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the authority you are offering?

Settle industrial process variability rather than assuming municipal experience transfers unchanged before outreach begins. An attractive title cannot repair unclear responsibility for industrial treatment processes and discharge-related operating controls once someone arrives. We put the difference around industrial process variability rather than assuming municipal experience transfers unchanged in front of you so the interview tests missing experience rather than assuming it is already there.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operator?

The median annual wage for Production Workers, All Other in the United States was $40,110 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $36,030 and $49,010. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $31,200. 90% earned less than $61,530.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operator at a plant?

Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operator is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 251,700 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operators are included within the SOC 51-9199 category, which identifies Production Workers, All Other. The national median salary for this group as of May 2025 is $40,110. This indicates a $1,290 increase over the previous median of $38,820 reported in May 2024.

The middle band width for this occupation is $12,980, defined by a P25 of $36,030 and a P75 of $49,010. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that this SOC does not isolate the technical requirements for managing influent variability or the specialized certification required for industrial treatment.

Industry-specific national data highlights the range of pay for production roles. Tobacco Manufacturing records a median of $77,630, Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills at $68,720, and Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing at $59,620. These variations confirm that industry context significantly influences the compensation of production employees. BLS data excludes total rewards such as performance bonuses, variable pay, and benefits. These medians represent base annual wages only. Because the role is mapped to a catch-all production category, the data should be used to benchmark against the broad manufacturing base rather than municipal treatment roles.

In the highest employment metros, regional data captures the broader occupation's characteristics. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA, metro has a median of $39,520 and a middle band width of $12,820. The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA, metro has a median of $40,970 and a middle band width of $14,330. The location quotient for Los Angeles is 1.1, while Atlanta reports 2.29. These quotients indicate the concentration of the aggregate occupation in these labor markets. Given the mapping, these figures capture the entire spectrum of production workers rather than the specific, process-critical skills of an industrial treatment operator.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

What is the primary constraint of using this data for treatment operator hiring?

The data is mapped to the catch-all SOC 51-9199. It does not account for the specific industrial process knowledge required for treatment performance, as it aggregates all production workers.

How does the national industry data help clarify this role's pay?

It demonstrates the wage capacity of major sectors, helping recruiters understand that production roles in higher-paying industries may draw talent away from standard treatment positions.

Why is the location quotient relevant to this analysis?

The location quotient indicates the concentration of the broad 51-9199 group in a region. It shows where production work is dense but does not measure the availability of skilled wastewater operators.
