What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Key Account Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $95,910 | $138,060 | $201,490 |
| May 2025 | $100,360 | $148,270 | $207,340 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about the decision behind the experience?
The useful evidence is an account plan connecting customer programs with supply and service obligations, not a list of equipment or projects. Discuss what information was available during an account plan connecting customer programs with supply and service obligations. A clear explanation exposes named-account responsibility rather than prospecting every business in a territory much better than asking whether the candidate has held the title before.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Key Account Manager?
The median annual wage for Sales Managers in the United States was $148,270 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $100,360 and $207,340. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $73,170. 90% earned less than $290,540.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Is this the pay for a Key Account Manager at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 637,080 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The national median salary for Key Account Managers in the May 2025 release is $148,270, a $10,210 increase from the May 2024 median of $138,060. This role falls under the broad Sales Managers SOC 11-2022 category, which encompasses 637,080 employees nationally. The middle-band width is $106,980, defined by a P25 of $100,360 and a P75 of $207,340.
These numbers reflect base pay and commissions as reported to BLS, though they omit non-monetary perks often found in industrial sales contracts.
Looking at high-employment metros, the New York-Newark-Jersey City area shows a median of $215,150, while the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim area sits at $132,330. New York experienced a medianChange of $3,480, compared to the $5,540 gain in Los Angeles. These figures are not hourly equivalents; they are annualized totals. Differences in these regional medians reflect the high-density nature of the respective markets rather than specific manufacturing pay scales for this exact role.
National industry rows indicate higher-than-average pay in high-tech and specialized manufacturing. Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing reports a $215,500 median, Semiconductor Manufacturing shows $200,050, and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing reaches $194,160. These are national industry benchmarks. Manufacturing Headhunters uses this data to advise on budget expectations, though we note the BLS does not isolate the Key Account Manager title from the general sales management pool.
The screening profile for this role emphasizes an account plan that connects customer programs with supply obligations. It requires dedicated responsibility for a specific named account rather than general territory prospecting. Because the BLS data uses a broader occupation definition, the hiring manager must weigh candidate experience against the $106,980 middle-band width. Location quotient data confirms high employment concentration in these regions, confirming deep candidate pools in manufacturing centers without explicitly stating local wage premiums.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Why is the New York median higher than the national median?
The New York metropolitan area reflects a higher cost of living and a higher concentration of high-paying industries. This is a regional outcome captured by the BLS in its broad occupational surveys.
What does the medianChange represent in the current data?
The medianChange of $10,210 represents the difference between the May 2024 and May 2025 median salary reported by the BLS for this occupation. It does not measure performance-based wage increases for individuals.
How do these figures relate to specific account management tasks?
The data is mapped to the broader Sales Managers occupation, not the specific tasks of managing named accounts. Hiring managers must account for these role-specific differences outside of the provided median.
