What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Metrology Technician, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Metrology Technician in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$38,740$47,460$59,970
May 2025$39,890$48,570$61,440

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about an interview based on the work?

Build the interview around measurement methods and setups supporting defensible dimensional results. A practical discussion of a datum or fixturing choice explained through the drawing tolerance can test judgment without using confidential drawings or customer information. Those limits help establish measurement judgment rather than only pressing start on a saved program; they are part of competence, not a weakness to talk around.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Metrology Technician?

The median annual wage for Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers in the United States was $48,570 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $39,890 and $61,440. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $35,510. 90% earned less than $77,860.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Metrology Technician at a plant?

The Metrology Technician title maps to the published occupation. BLS does not separate this process, credential, shift or plant-specific title from other work in the occupation. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 597,370 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Metrology Technician positions map to the Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers category. This group has a national employment level of 597370. For Metrology Technician in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $48,570; the May 2024 median is $47,460. Their arithmetic difference is $1,110.

They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. For Metrology Technician in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $39,890 to $61,440 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. Manufacturing Headhunters highlights that this data excludes benefits, which are standard in high-end metrology roles. The BLS does not differentiate metrology from general inspection, so these figures reflect the broad scope of all testers.

Industry-specific national medians for this occupation include $74450 in Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing, $73310 in Motor Vehicle Manufacturing, and $64560 in Ship and Boat Building. These figures represent the national industry level. When examining specific metros, Chicago-Naperville-Elgin reports a median of $48230 with a location quotient of 1.33. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim reports a median of $51560 with a location quotient of 0.94. These values demonstrate local variation without factoring in specific job-level requirements.

The role of a Metrology Technician often involves complex measurement judgment beyond simple program execution. Because the SOC 51-9061 code covers such a wide array of roles, the national median of $48570 is an aggregate. Employers need to account for this broad categorization when assessing compensation, as the metrology function often requires skills beyond basic sorting.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

For Metrology Technician in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $39,890 to $61,440 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them.

Why is the national median lower than the Aerospace industry median?

The Aerospace median of $74450 represents a specific sector within the larger inspection SOC. The national median of $48570 aggregates all industries, including those with lower complexity inspection tasks.

What can I conclude from the two release estimates?

For Metrology Technician in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $39,890 to $61,440 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. It supports that technical roles like metrology often fall into the higher percentiles of this range.

Is the Chicago location quotient useful for setting metrology pay?

The location quotient of 1.33 signifies the concentration of inspector roles in Chicago. It does not set pay, nor does it distinguish metrology technicians from general quality staff.
