What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For National Sales Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $95,910 | $138,060 | $201,490 |
| May 2025 | $100,360 | $148,270 | $207,340 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about a move that can hold up?
Someone working in national sales leaders with manufacturing and industrial-product customers needs a clear reason to leave. If the answer depends on authority over sales coverage and account priorities across a national market that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a National Sales Manager?
The median annual wage for Sales Managers in the United States was $148,270 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $100,360 and $207,340. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $73,170. 90% earned less than $290,540.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Is this the pay for a National Sales Manager at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 637,080 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The national median for Sales Managers stands at $148,270, according to May 2025 BLS data. National sales managers who oversee cross-regional territories are mapped to this broader occupation. The current median reflects a $10,210 increase over the previous May 2024 median of $138,060.
The total middle band width for this SOC is $106,980, which illustrates the high compensation variance inherent in sales management roles.
Manufacturing industries show competitive medians: $215,500 for Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing, $200,050 for Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing, and $194,160 for Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing. These medians reflect national averages in these sectors. BLS data excludes essential sales components like performance incentives, equity, and commission pools, making the reported figures a conservative base. The limitation of this data is that it aggregates all sales managers, which may dilute the figures when benchmarked against specific national sales leadership roles.
Comparison metros provide data for high-concentration regions. New York-Newark-Jersey City reports a $215,150 median and a $150,550 middle band width. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim lists a $132,330 median with a $105,080 middle band width. The location quotient confirms these areas are major centers for sales leadership. Manufacturing Headhunters points out that these broad medians include retail and service sales roles, so they should be interpreted as lower-bound estimates for high-level national manufacturing sales managers. The data set is designed to show occupational trends rather than narrow job titles.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Should I use the national sales manager median to set an offer?
These figures provide a base benchmark for national sales management roles. However, because BLS data excludes commission structures, you must add these to arrive at a realistic total compensation package.
Why are the medians for tech and pharma sectors so much higher?
These industries typically require higher technical expertise and command higher margins, which often results in elevated compensation for sales leadership and management teams.
What does the location quotient imply for this role?
A high location quotient indicates that the job density for sales managers is significantly higher in these metros compared to the national average. It correlates with high hiring volume but not with specific talent availability.
