What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For QC Lab Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $94,620 | $121,440 | $156,330 |
| May 2025 | $98,160 | $126,060 | $161,880 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about the decision behind the experience?
The useful evidence is an out-of-specification investigation that distinguished a sample from a method problem, not a list of equipment or projects. A clear explanation exposes laboratory management rather than ownership of the entire site QMS much better than asking whether the candidate has held the title before.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a QC Lab Manager?
The median annual wage for Industrial Production Managers in the United States was $126,060 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $98,160 and $161,880. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $78,000. 90% earned less than $205,520.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a QC Lab Manager at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 246,250 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The QC Lab Manager role involves managing laboratory operations, specifically conducting out-of-specification investigations to distinguish sample issues from method errors. This role differs from a Site Quality Manager, as the primary responsibility remains within the lab environment rather than overseeing the entire facility Quality Management System. Manufacturing Headhunters monitors this title under the broader Industrial Production Managers classification.
Since the BLS does not provide a dedicated wage row for this manufacturing title, the provided data reflects the larger occupational group.
The national median salary for this role is $126,060, marking a $4,620 shift from the May 2024 median of $121,440. The middle-band width is $63,720. Note that the BLS survey excludes supplemental pay such as performance bonuses, overtime, or health benefits. Industry-specific medians are higher in sectors such as Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing, which reports a median of $155,730. Iron and Steel Mills and Ferroalloy Manufacturing indicates a median of $145,280 for this category.
Regional data for Los Angeles shows a median of $128,540, while Chicago-Naperville-Elgin reports $129,840. The Los Angeles middle-band width is $63,060, compared to $61,100 in Chicago. These metrics track the overall Industrial Production Managers category and should be scrutinized for their relevance to your specific laboratory-management scope. The location quotient for Chicago at 1.24 indicates a sound regional concentration, while the Los Angeles location quotient of 0.92 reflects a slightly lower density relative to other major hubs.
Data limitations persist because the Industrial Production Managers category is too broad to pinpoint specific microbiology or chemical testing site roles. As such, these figures cannot serve as absolute benchmarks for specialized lab leadership. Managers should be aware that the wage progression reflects the broader aggregate. We do not provide estimates to bridge these data gaps. Use the supplied national and regional metrics as an initial reference to identify broader market conditions while acknowledging the inherent variance in local labor requirements.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Does this data reflect only chemical lab management?
No, the data encompasses the broader Industrial Production Managers occupation. It is not segmented by specialized lab discipline.
What explains the wage difference between Petroleum and Iron sectors?
The difference is based on distinct industry-specific occupational wage reporting in the provided packet. These figures illustrate the industry-wide variances in total compensation for the category.
How should I use the $126,060 national median?
It serves as a starting point to assess current market conditions for the broader occupation. You must compare your lab's specific technical scope against the definition of the larger occupational category.
