What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Quality Systems Engineer / Specialist, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $81,910 | $101,140 | $127,480 |
| May 2025 | $83,600 | $102,440 | $129,250 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about an interview based on the work?
Build the interview around QMS procedures and evidence that documents match actual plant work. Those limits help establish system implementation rather than final authority for product release; they are part of competence, not a weakness to talk around.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Quality Systems Engineer / Specialist?
The median annual wage for Industrial Engineers in the United States was $102,440 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $83,600 and $129,250. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,370. 90% earned less than $159,860.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Quality Systems Engineer / Specialist at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 365,740 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The Quality Systems Engineer or Specialist focuses on managing CAPA systems and ensuring that documentation changes are effective after internal and external audits. Unlike final authority roles, this position centers on system implementation and governance rather than direct product release responsibility. Manufacturing Headhunters maps this role to the broader Industrial Engineers classification.
Because this is not a discrete BLS category, the provided wages encompass all engineering positions within the broader data set.
Nationally, the median pay is $102,440, a change of $1,300 from the prior median of $101,140. The middle-band width between the 25th and 75th percentiles is $45,650. Please note that BLS wage records ignore supplementary pay components such as signing bonuses or equity. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing shows a median of $127,140, while Chemical Manufacturing registers at $118,700 for the sector, highlighting the range of wages across different industries in the national industrial engineering cohort.
Detroit-Warren-Dearborn reports a regional median of $104,110 with a middle-band width of $45,180, while Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington reports a median of $104,730 and a width of $39,440. The location quotient for Detroit is 3.87, indicating a high concentration of related roles compared to the national baseline. Minneapolis shows a 3.04 quotient. These metrics provide insight into regional density, yet they do not provide a direct measure of local talent supply or the specific difficulty of filling quality-systems-specific roles.
The data's limitation is the broad scope of the Industrial Engineers occupation, which does not distinguish between systems specialists and other engineering disciplines. You cannot use these figures to derive specific pay for document governance versus product-design tasks. We do not estimate or infer values. Use these figures as a general reference for the national industrial engineering labor market, and always adjust for the specific technical complexity required at your facility.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Does this median reflect specialized quality systems roles?
No, the median reflects the broader Industrial Engineers occupational code. It is an aggregate of many different engineering functions.
What is the middle-band width for the national occupation?
The middle-band width is $45,650. This figure is the difference between the 75th and 25th percentiles of the national data.
Are regional location quotients tied to local wages?
No, location quotients measure the concentration of employment in an area compared to the national average. They are not a measurement of local salary levels.
