What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Senior Process Technician, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $35,080 | $38,820 | $47,550 |
| May 2025 | $36,030 | $40,110 | $49,010 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.
- Supervisor occupation: Production Supervisor pay (SOC 51-1011)
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about an interview based on the work?
Build the interview around difficult process adjustments and diagnosis within established operating limits. Those limits help establish technical process depth rather than authority to change the validated process alone; they are part of competence, not a weakness to talk around.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Senior Process Technician?
The median annual wage for Production Workers, All Other in the United States was $40,110 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $36,030 and $49,010. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $31,200. 90% earned less than $61,530.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Is this the pay for a Senior Process Technician at a plant?
Senior Process Technician is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 251,700 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
National industry statistics provide insight into wage benchmarks. Tobacco Manufacturing reports a median of $77,630, Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills reports $68,720, and Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reports $59,620. These variations illustrate the impact of industry sector on production-level compensation.
Senior Process Technicians are mapped to SOC 51-9199, Production Workers, All Other. The national median salary as of May 2025 is $40,110. This is an increase of $1,290 compared to the May 2024 median of $38,820. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that the broad nature of the 51-9199 SOC category prevents the capture of the specific technical expertise required for process stabilization and troubleshooting that defines a senior technician.
It is vital to remember that BLS data excludes key components of the total reward package such as bonuses, benefits, and shift incentives. These medians reflect annual base pay for the entire catch-all production category, not specifically for senior-level technical process roles.
Regional employment data highlights the concentration of this aggregate occupation in two hubs. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA, metro has a median of $39,520 with a middle band width of $12,820. The location quotient in Los Angeles is 1.1 and in Atlanta is 2.29, which indicates the concentration of the broader production workforce. Because the classification is so general, these figures do not isolate the seniority, plant-specific technical depth, or the capacity to correct unstable processes.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How does the catch-all 51-9199 code affect the data?
The data is diluted by averaging wages across all production roles. It fails to specifically represent the value of senior technical process expertise.
Are the Atlanta/Los Angeles medians specific to process technicians?
No, these medians cover the entire SOC 51-9199 population in those regions. They should not be confused with compensation for specialized senior technical staff.
Why is the national middle band width only $12,980?
This narrow range shows that most production workers in this catch-all category are paid within a relatively tight wage band. High-value senior technicians are likely skewing toward the higher end of the distribution.
