What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Skilled Machine Operator, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $35,080 | $38,820 | $47,550 |
| May 2025 | $36,030 | $40,110 | $49,010 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.
- Supervisor occupation: Production Supervisor pay (SOC 51-1011)
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about an interview based on the work?
Build the interview around machine operation and in-process decisions beyond starting and stopping. A practical discussion of a process deviation recognized before more nonconforming product was made can test judgment without using confidential drawings or customer information. Those limits help establish operator adjustment authority versus maintenance or setup work; they are part of competence, not a weakness to talk around.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Skilled Machine Operator?
The median annual wage for Production Workers, All Other in the United States was $40,110 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $36,030 and $49,010. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $31,200. 90% earned less than $61,530.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Skilled Machine Operator at a plant?
Skilled Machine Operator is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 251,700 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
Skilled Machine Operator tasks are categorized within the broader Production Workers, All Other, SOC 51-9199. The national median for this occupation is $40,110, an increase of 1290 from the May 2024 data. The middle-band width stands at 12,980, calculated from the 25th percentile at $36,030 to the 75th percentile at $49,010.
Because BLS data does not isolate specific process or operator-level adjustments, this guide is based on a screening process that distinguishes operator adjustment authority from maintenance work.
When viewing high-employment areas, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA, reports a median of $39,520 with a 1610 increase, while Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA, lists a median of $40,970 with an 860 increase. Manufacturing Headhunters uses these benchmarks to help hiring managers calibrate their offers within competitive labor markets. The location quotient in Atlanta is significantly higher at 2.29, compared to 1.1 in the Los Angeles area, suggesting a dense concentration of production roles in the Georgia market.
National industry-specific rows provide further pay markers. Tobacco Manufacturing, NAICS 312200, reports a median of $77,630. Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills, NAICS 322100, shows a median of $68,720. Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing, NAICS 336400, sits at $59,620. These figures are national and do not capture local wage premiums or specific plant-level bonuses. It is important to remember that BLS surveys do not track variables such as individual performance incentives or specific manufacturing software certifications.
The analysis provided is based on the May 2025 data. The middle-band width of 12,980 highlights the variance in pay for skilled production roles. This data serves as a guide rather than a fixed rule, especially when evaluating roles involving specific contamination or quality control tasks. Always compare the candidate's actual ability to diagnose and adjust machinery against the SOC 51-9199 definition. No estimations are provided; all figures are taken directly from the source packets.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How should I evaluate candidates against the SOC 51-9199 classification?
The SOC 51-9199 category is quite broad, so you must define the candidate's specific adjustment authority. We screen for the ability to correct process deviations, which separates skilled operators from general laborers.
Why is the median for Tobacco Manufacturing so much higher than the general production worker median?
Tobacco manufacturing involves specific, often automated and highly regulated, production environments that demand higher skill levels. This leads to a national industry-specific median that exceeds the general occupation average.
What does the middle-band width tell me about pay competition?
The middle-band width of 12,980 indicates that half of the workers fall within this wage spread. This helps you understand if a salary offer is positioned to attract candidates relative to other employers in the market.
