The hiring decision

What makes this hire work on your plant floor?

1 for earthmoving and industrial equipment. We ask which procedures the person has welded to, whether they passed a company test or an AWS position test, and what their qualification status is today. We also ask how they respond when a weld fails visual inspection.

Industrial machinery builders weld heavy weldments to AWS D1.1 and D14 while running robots beside manual stations. We find employed production welders who already work that way.

Frames for presses, excavators and agricultural equipment involve thick plate, long welds and distortion control. We ask about plate thickness, joint prep, preheat practice, and how the welder sequences passes to keep a frame square.

Machinery builders often work to AWS D1.1 for structural steel and D14.3 or D14.1 for earthmoving and industrial equipment. We ask which procedures the person has welded to, whether they passed a company test or an AWS position test, and what their qualification status is today. We also ask how they respond when a weld fails visual inspection.

Before an introduction

What do we check before you interview?

Production welders at machine builders read weld symbols, assembly drawings and bills of material. We check whether they can lay out a simple weldment, use a combination square, a level and a tape accurately, and tell the fitter when a part is out of tolerance.

  • Robotic and manual on one floor

We ask whether the person has loaded cells, touched up robot welds or trained on a teach pendant. Some welders want to program, while others prefer manual work, and we find out which.

  • Reading prints and fitting

Production welders at machine builders read weld symbols, assembly drawings and bills of material. We check whether they can lay out a simple weldment, use a combination square, a level and a tape accurately, and tell the fitter when a part is out of tolerance. This avoids hiring someone who can lay beads but struggles with the print.

  • Quality of finished welds

Machinery customers inspect welds visually and sometimes with magnetic particle testing. We ask what defects the welder most often finds in their own work, how they grind and repair, and how they handle undercut and porosity. Honest answers show someone who takes ownership of the weld rather than leaving it to the inspector.

  • Safety around heavy parts

Weldments weigh hundreds or thousands of pounds. We ask about crane signals, chain and sling inspection, turning fixtures and fume control. A welder who works around heavy parts safely keeps both themselves and the crew out of harm's way.

  • Fit-up tolerance and distortion

We ask how the welder handles gaps, uses clamps and strongbacks, and decides to stop and call the fitter instead of forcing a joint. Good judgment here prevents scrap on expensive frames.

  • Cycle of work on a busy floor

Production welders are asked to move between product lines as orders change. We ask how comfortable the person is with changing procedures and wire types in a day, and how they keep records tidy when moving between jobs.

Direct search

Where are qualified people working now?

Skilled production welders in machinery plants are employed, often with a decade at one shop. We find them by phoning welders and leads at agricultural, trailer, mining and construction equipment makers, by talking with fabricators whose work is cyclical, and by reaching technical college welding instructors who know their strongest graduates.

Welders from pressure vessel and structural shops also transfer, particularly those who want steadier work on one product family. A smaller pool is welders from robotic automotive suppliers who want more manual and varied work.

Retired or semi-retired welding instructors can be a surprising source of referrals because they know which former students became reliable production welders and which are ready for a new floor.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Heavy weldment experience. A welder who describes using stagger welds and back-step technique has done the work, while one who only mentions speed has probably done lighter fabrication. Fit-up tolerance and distortion. Parts that arrive from burn tables or machining may not fit perfectly.

  • Robotic and manual on one floor. A welder who works beside a robot cell needs to understand fixturing, tack quality and part fit-up, since a poor tack stops the robot.

The search

How the search runs?

We begin by learning what you build, the typical plate thickness, the codes you weld to, shift pattern and how robot and manual stations are staffed. We also ask about your test procedure so we can describe it to candidates in advance, then agree the terms in writing.

  1. Agree the brief

We begin by learning what you build, the typical plate thickness, the codes you weld to, shift pattern and how robot and manual stations are staffed. We also ask about your test procedure so we can describe it to candidates in advance, then agree the terms in writing.

  2. Approach relevant people

We then call working welders, ask them to describe the work they do and the tests they have passed, and send you a short profile for each strong fit. Candidates who need a weld test to prove themselves are told about it up front.

  3. Qualify the work and support the hire

On site, a weld test or fit-up exercise usually forms part of the interview. We help handle notice, offer and start arrangements once you decide. Where a machinery builder also fields service work, we tell welders whether any travel to customer sites is expected, since some prefer a fixed shop and others welcome occasional trips.
