The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
A field service engineer is the person your customer sees when a line is down, and the one who starts a new machine the first time. We recruit service engineers who can walk into an unfamiliar plant, read the electrical and hydraulic problem, and leave the maintenance crew better off, so your uptime reputation is built on people who can actually fix things.
We ask for a hard fault they chased from symptom to cause. Real answers include how they isolated electrical from hydraulic or mechanical, what they measured, which documents they used and when they escalated. We watch for guessing, parts swapping and the habit of blaming the operator before checking the machine.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
Our recruiter conversations establish what the candidate says they personally handled, how they made decisions and why they would consider this opening. The brief identifies candidate-reported information, available supporting evidence and unresolved questions. Your team still assesses technical performance, site-specific safety requirements and the authority the person will need.
Hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical fundamentals
Some candidates are strong on software but weak on a pump, a servo valve or a motor starter. We probe schematics reading, pressure and flow checks, drive parameter work and meter use.
Startup and commissioning experience
Startups differ from breakdown calls. We ask whether they have led site acceptance tests, trained operators, written punch lists, and handled a customer whose building, utilities or product was not ready. Candidates who have only done repair work are identified so you can decide how much startup coaching they would need.
Travel reality and customer conduct
We state the travel pattern plainly at the start and confirm it with the candidate, including weekends, extended site stays and responsiveness to calls. We also look at how they behave inside plants, covering lockout, permits and respect for the people running the equipment. A technician who cuts corners on safety is a liability on every site you serve.

Direct search
Where are qualified people working now?
Strong field service engineers are employed, and usually travelling right now. We look first at machine builders and equipment makers whose service teams train people on complex machinery, and at integrators that commission lines and keep their engineers on the road. We also approach plant controls and maintenance technicians who have commissioned equipment as a customer and want to move to the other side of that relationship.
Military technicians are a real pool, especially people who maintained complex electromechanical or hydraulic systems and worked in remote conditions. We assess them on the specific systems you service, not on the branch or rating. We tell you which candidates are strong on mechanical and which on controls, and which would need product-specific training before they can be left alone at a customer site.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
- PLC and controls depth. Service often means connecting a laptop to a controller they did not write.
- PLC and controls depth. We confirm which platforms they have worked on, how they handle backup and version control before changing anything, how they read a safety circuit, and whether they have edited code live or only watched someone else do it.
- Hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical fundamentals. For your equipment we match the mix, because a press needs different strengths than a packaging machine.
Executive-search discipline, on every assignment
What do you get from the Six-Step Search?
Plant leaders, engineers and skilled technicians receive the same care in defining the work, researching relevant backgrounds and understanding the individual. Pulling a list and sending messages is not the hard part. The value is doing the research and qualification well enough to support a sound hiring decision.
Calibrate the work and the decision
We start with the operating problem, what the hire must improve and the decisions they will own. We agree what experience matters, who supports the role and what you can realistically offer. A maintenance leader inheriting reactive breakdowns needs a different brief from one building a reliability program.
Research relevant plants and people
We research manufacturing environments where people have handled comparable work. Process, equipment and decision authority matter more than a matching title. We look for relevant professionals, including people who are not applying, rather than treating an exported list as a completed search.
Make respectful, targeted contact
We explain why the work may be relevant and invite a conversation without pressure. We agree what information may be shared on a confidential search. Contact is the start of qualification, not evidence that someone wants the job or fits it.
Discuss the work they personally performed
Our conversations separate an individual's decisions and responsibilities from the team's results. We explore judgment under pressure, reasons for considering a move and practical expectations. For technicians, that includes equipment background, shift, commute and the support available. Candidate accounts are identified as such; a conversation is not a technical certification.
Write down fit, gaps and open questions
You receive a written candidate brief connecting the person's background to your operating problem. It explains motivation and practical fit, the gaps we have identified and what remains to assess. We distinguish candidate-reported information from supporting evidence rather than presenting every statement as independently verified.
Stay involved through interviews and offers
We use your interview feedback to clarify gaps and keep both sides informed about the work and expectations. We help address offer questions, counteroffers and practical concerns without promising an acceptance. Your team makes the hiring decision and assesses technical capability and site-specific requirements. A shortlist is an output of this work, not the whole service.

What else affects this Field Service Engineer hire?
When do we owe a fee?
Only after you hire a candidate we presented and they start. If no one fits, you owe nothing, even after weeks of technical screening.
Can we keep the search confidential?
Yes: We describe you by machine type and region and ask permission before a candidate learns your name. That helps when you are replacing a technician your customers know personally.
How do you find service engineers who are not looking?
We contact them directly while they are between customer sites, with a message about your machines and travel pattern. Strong technicians respond to specifics about equipment and territory far more than to a posting.
Is relocation realistic for this role?
Often the better question is location relative to airports and customers. We check whether they would live near a hub or your plant, and we raise family travel tolerance early so an offer does not stall.
What other titles do you search under?
Service Engineer, Senior Field Service Technician, commissioning engineer and start-up technician overlap closely. We look past the label and evaluate the controls, hydraulic and customer work each candidate has done.

What should we discuss first?
What is your fee for a field service engineer search?
It is a percentage of the first-year base salary of the person you hire, set in writing before we begin. Overtime, per diem and on-call pay are not part of how we calculate it.
Questions before starting a search
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
