What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Assistant Plant Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $94,620 | $121,440 | $156,330 |
| May 2025 | $98,160 | $126,060 | $161,880 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about responsibilities behind the title?
Fit depends on succession intent. If you are hiring a future plant manager, we look for people who have already covered for the boss, handled customers or the corporate review, and shown judgment across departments. If you need a strong operations deputy, we look for depth in the production floor and the daily management system.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Assistant Plant Manager?

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 246,250 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The Assistant Plant Manager role falls under the Industrial Production Managers SOC, yielding a national median of $126,060. This is a $4,620 increase over the previous year. Within this occupation, industries like Iron and Steel Mills and Ferroalloy Manufacturing report a median of $145,280, providing a high-water mark for comparison.
Manufacturing Headhunters observes that the middle band width of $63,720 is wide for an assistant-level role, as it includes the entire range of production management. This breadth implies that the market value for an Assistant Plant Manager who is ready for the top job is closer to the P75 percentile of $161,880 than to the median, especially when succession planning is a primary recruitment driver.
The highest employment metros for this SOC are Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, with medians of $128,540 and $129,840, respectively. These figures are strictly based on occupational data and do not reflect the specific technical demands or the breadth of production/maintenance ownership that an assistant might hold. BLS reports provide a baseline for the base salary only. Hiring managers must account for the fact that these medians are averages across all production management roles, which may skew the data if the pool includes managers with significantly different scopes of authority. Given these limitations, the May 2025 data should be treated as a foundation for negotiation rather than a definitive salary level for a high-potential individual. The figures are stable and accurate to the source, and should guide your pay strategy as a baseline anchor that recognizes the role's role in future leadership continuity.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How does the assistant-level nature of this role change how I use the median?
Since the BLS median is for all production managers, you should treat the median as a mid-level anchor. For a strong assistant manager with maintenance and production oversight, aim for the mid-to-high point of the band.
Why would the P75 percentile be a better target for this role?
If you are hiring an Assistant Plant Manager as a direct successor for a Plant Manager, their readiness and experience warrant pay near the P75 percentile of $161,880.
How do industry-specific rows assist in this hiring?
The $145,280 figure in Iron and Steel highlights the compensation premium for roles in heavy manufacturing. If your plant requires similar heavy-duty expertise, this is the figure to benchmark against.
