What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Plant Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $94,620 | $121,440 | $156,330 |
| May 2025 | $98,160 | $126,060 | $161,880 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about responsibilities behind the title?
Real fit is about the plant, not the title. Ask how many people reported up, whether the site was union, what the plant made and how, how much of the work was make-to-order, and whether the candidate owned the P&L or only the cost side.
A manager from a 600-person high-mix machine shop is a risky bet for a 120-person continuous-process plant, even with the same title and the same tenure.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Plant Manager?
The median annual wage for Industrial Production Managers in the United States was $126,060 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $98,160 and $161,880. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $78,000. 90% earned less than $205,520.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Plant Manager at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 246,250 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
For a Plant Manager, the Bureau of Labor Statistics places this role under the Industrial Production Managers SOC, providing a national median of $126,060. This represents a $4,620 increase from the May 2024 data. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that while this is the baseline, the national industry-specific rows, such as the $155,730 median in Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing, offer a more accurate reflection for roles in high-complexity environments. The middle band width of $63,720 is significant, yet it excludes factors like TRIR/DART safety record impact or the specific ERP expertise (such as enterprise planning or cloud manufacturing software) required in this digital manufacturing environments. These variables determine where a candidate falls within that band.
Regional employment concentrations in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin show medians of $128,540 and $129,840, respectively. These are the metros with the highest volume of these roles. Hiring managers should note that the location quotient, such as the 1.24 in Chicago, refers to employment concentration rather than candidate availability. It is crucial to view the provided medians as starting points, as the actual compensation will be driven by the specific plant budget and headcount for which the manager is responsible. Because these statistics aggregate all industrial production managers, they do not distinguish between a manager leading a massive unionized plant and one managing a smaller, non-union facility. Using this May 2025 data as a framework, managers can establish a competitive range, keeping in mind that total compensation packages will extend beyond these base figures to include performance bonuses which the BLS survey excludes.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Does this data reflect union vs. non-union differences?
The data does not distinguish between union and non-union facilities. Hiring managers must use their internal judgment to adjust for the specific labor relations requirements of their plant.
How should I handle the $63,720 middle band width in my hiring process?
This bandwidth covers the broad spectrum of plant complexity. Use the lower end for managers of smaller facilities and the higher end for those managing multi-building, high-safety-risk sites with larger budgets.
Is the increase of $4,620 a market trend or an estimate?
This is an arithmetic fact based strictly on the reported May 2024 and May 2025 survey results. It is an official change in the median for this occupation, not an estimate or speculation.
