What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Manufacturing Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $94,620 | $121,440 | $156,330 |
| May 2025 | $98,160 | $126,060 | $161,880 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about leading through supervisors?
A manufacturing manager rarely touches the floor directly. We ask how many supervisors report to them, how they coach a weak one and what happened to the last supervisor they let go. We also ask how they run shift handoffs and how they find out about problems before the morning meeting.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Manufacturing Manager?
The median annual wage for Industrial Production Managers in the United States was $126,060 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $98,160 and $161,880. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $78,000. 90% earned less than $205,520.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Manufacturing Manager at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 246,250 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The Manufacturing Manager role is categorized under Industrial Production Managers, with a national median of $126,060, following a $4,620 increase since the May 2024 reporting period. Manufacturing Headhunters utilizes this broader classification as a fundamental anchor, but strongly suggests cross-referencing against industry-specific medians, such as the $145,280 for Iron and Steel Mills and the $155,730 for Petroleum and Coal Products.
These comparisons indicate that the specific manufacturing context is a primary driver of base salary expectations. The middle band width for this occupational group is $63,720, a range that accommodates a wide spectrum of roles from discrete parts manufacturing to complex process environments.
Regional data reveals that the highest occupation volume exists in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim area with a median of $128,540, and in Chicago-Naperville-Elgin at $129,840. These regions provide a reference for metro-level expectations, though they do not replace the need for industry-specific analysis. It is critical for hiring managers to remember that the BLS excludes variable compensation such as production-linked bonuses or performance-based incentives. Furthermore, the role of Manufacturing Manager often involves direct oversight of multiple supervisors and KPI-driven management of shifts, responsibilities that command premium pay at the higher percentiles, such as the P75 level of $161,880. As the May 2025 data reflects a broad aggregation of industrial roles, it should be used for foundational salary structure, with adjustments made for the unique complexity and team size of the specific site in question. By evaluating candidates against these verified figures, managers can ensure their compensation strategy remains anchored in the reality of the current industrial labor market.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How does the broader classification impact my ability to hire a specialist?
Because the classification is broad, you must look at the industry-specific rows to understand the market rate for a specialist. Using the industry-specific $155,730 row will be more effective than using the general median when hiring for high-barrier manufacturing.
What is the best way to use the P75 to P90 range?
The P75 to P90 range captures the compensation for managers overseeing large-scale operations and complex KPI boards. Target this range if you need to hire someone capable of immediate performance improvements.
Are the metro-specific medians for LA and Chicago accurate for all plants?
The metro-specific figures are medians for all Industrial Production Managers in those areas. They are a good starting point, but they do not account for individual plant differences in safety records or union status.
