What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Controls / Automation Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Controls / Automation Manager in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$134,930$167,740$207,210
May 2025$139,360$171,270$212,500

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about standards that were actually adopted?

Many managers have written a standard. Fewer have enforced it. We ask what the candidate standardized: PLC programming templates, naming conventions, HMI libraries, network architecture, spare parts. Then we ask how they handled a plant manager or integrator who refused, and what happened afterward.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Controls / Automation Manager?

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $120,810. 90% earned less than $262,760.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. What does this data mean for your opening?

Controls/Automation Managers are mapped to the broader BLS classification for Architectural and Engineering Managers, SOC 11-9041. Because the BLS aggregates all engineering managers, it does not publish a specific salary for automation-focused managers. 0 projects and controlling standards across plants, are captured within this broader group.

The national median for this occupation is $171,270, representing a $3,530 increase from the May 2024 median of $167,740. It is important to note that BLS data covers base earnings and does not include executive-level performance bonuses or long-term equity incentives.

The middle-band width for this occupation is $73,140, calculated from the P75 value of $212,500 and the P25 value of $139,360. This reflects the significant range of responsibilities found in engineering management, from managing smaller cell-specific teams to overseeing broad multi-site automation roadmaps. The P10 level starts at $120,810, while the P90 level reaches $262,760. Manufacturers must weigh these band limits carefully when seeking candidates with both technical mastery and strategic leadership skills. Offers should align with the breadth of the scope assigned to the manager rather than the generalized median.

Major metropolitan areas provide context on local versus national wage patterns. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA area reports a median of $190,900, a $9,500 change from the previous median. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI area reports a median of $168,550, a $660 change. Detroit holds a location quotient of 3.43, indicating a very high concentration of these management roles compared to Los Angeles, which has a 1.08 quotient. These figures signify employment density, not candidate supply or local pay. These variances illustrate that even within management roles, geography influences the deviation from the national median of $171,270.

Industry-specific national data offers broader context for manufacturing management, though these represent national sectoral averages. Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reports a median of $192,800, Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing sits at $183,950, and Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing is at $179,720. These figures suggest higher compensation tiers for managers in highly technical sectors. Since these industry benchmarks are broader than the management role itself, they should guide, not define, specific job offers. Organizations should utilize these indicators to balance external competitiveness with internal organizational pay structures.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

What does the $73,140 middle-band width represent for managers?

The middle-band width represents the difference between the P25 and P75 percentiles. It shows the typical spread of base compensation for engineering management and highlights the variance in seniority and scope.

How does the Detroit median relate to the national median?

The Detroit median of $168,550 is slightly lower than the national median of $171,270. This regional deviation reflects the specific wage market for engineering managers in that manufacturing center.

Does the BLS provide separate wage data for Automation Managers?

No, the BLS classifies Automation Managers within the broad Architectural and Engineering Managers occupation. Thus, specific management tasks in automation are not individually isolated in the data.
