What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Director of Sales, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $95,910 | $138,060 | $201,490 |
| May 2025 | $100,360 | $148,270 | $207,340 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about an interview based on the work?
Build the interview around sales managers and commercial execution for a manufactured product line. A practical discussion of a forecast review that separated firm demand from hopeful pipeline can test judgment without using confidential drawings or customer information. Those limits help establish sales-function management rather than personally owning every territory; they are part of competence, not a weakness to talk around.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Director of Sales?
The median annual wage for Sales Managers in the United States was $148,270 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $100,360 and $207,340. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $73,170. 90% earned less than $290,540.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Director of Sales at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 637,080 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The national median for Sales Managers, which encompasses sales directors, is $148,270. This represents a $10,210 increase from the May 2024 median of $138,060. The occupation reports a middle band width of $106,980, reflecting the significant variance in compensation for sales management roles. These figures establish the national baseline for the broader SOC 11-2022 category.
Industry-specific national medians include $215,500 for Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing, $200,050 for Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing, and $194,160 for Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing. These industry rows highlight higher pay tiers for sales leadership in manufacturing sectors. BLS data is limited here because it excludes commissions, equity, and performance bonuses, which typically represent the majority of compensation for sales directors. Therefore, these figures represent base wages rather than total realized income.
Comparison regions demonstrate significant pay gaps. New York-Newark-Jersey City reports a $215,150 median with a $150,550 middle band width. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim lists a $132,330 median with a $105,080 middle band width. The location quotient reflects the concentration of sales leadership roles in these hubs. Manufacturing Headhunters advises that because this SOC aggregates all sales managers, including those in retail and service, these medians may understate the total compensation expected by high-level sales directors in manufacturing. Careful consideration of these variables is necessary when using this data.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How do you account for the missing commission and bonus data?
The BLS OEWS program only tracks base annual salaries. We recommend adjusting these benchmarks significantly upward to account for standard executive commission structures and performance bonuses.
Why is the middle band width so extreme for sales roles?
The $106,980 band reflects the enormous compensation spectrum for sales management, which spans small-business sales leads to multi-national corporate executive roles.
Is the $10,210 median change significant?
This arithmetic change shows year-over-year movement in the broader BLS report. It indicates an upward trend in reported base compensation, though it is not a direct reflection of specific manufacturing director pay growth.
