What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Electrical Engineer (Plant), clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Electrical Engineer (Plant) in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$87,590$111,910$141,630
May 2025$92,830$120,630$152,950

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about capital projects and utility work?

We ask about service upgrades, transformer replacements, generator and transfer switch projects, and new line power. A candidate should describe working with the utility, electrical contractors and commissioning, and how they handled outage windows when production could not stop.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Electrical Engineer (Plant)?

The median annual wage for Electrical Engineers in the United States was $120,630 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $92,830 and $152,950. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $76,550. 90% earned less than $184,300.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Electrical Engineer (Plant) at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 198,750 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Electrical Engineer (Plant) is mapped to the broader BLS classification for Electrical Engineers, SOC 17-2071. The BLS does not isolate plant-specific electrical roles, meaning this data reflects all electrical engineering functions. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that actual shop-floor duties such as NFPA 70E compliance, MCC management, and VFD integration are represented within this broader aggregate.

The national median for this occupation is $120,630, reflecting a $8,720 increase from the May 2024 median of $111,910. This salary data excludes supplemental compensation, including production bonuses and shift incentives common in plant environments.

The middle-band width for this occupation is $60,120, defined by the P75 value of $152,950 and the P25 value of $92,830. This figure signifies the market spread for professional experience and technical proficiency. The P10 level is $76,550, while the P90 level is $184,300, illustrating the higher end of compensation for experts managing critical power distribution and plant safety. Manufacturers should recognize this range as a indicator for mid-to-senior engineering hiring. It is essential to ensure that salary offers align with the specific technical demands of the role rather than the broad national average.

Looking at high-employment metros provides context on wage variance. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA area reports a median of $139,780, showing a $4,880 change from the prior median. The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ area reports a median of $128,340, a $1,180 change. Los Angeles has a location quotient of 1.12, and New York is at 0.52, representing the density of these roles in the local market. These quotients quantify employment concentration but do not dictate candidate availability or local pay. These localized figures show that professional wages often exceed the national median of $120,630 in major metro areas.

National sectoral data offers further insights for manufacturing, though these figures are industry-wide, not occupation-specific. Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reports a median of $141,160, while Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports $137,540. These sectoral figures, consistently higher than the national median, highlight the emphasis on electrical reliability in these critical industries. Since the BLS does not track specific plant-based electrical wages separately, these sector benchmarks provide a helpful point of comparison. Employers should combine these industry-level insights with their specific operational needs to structure sustainable, market-aligned engineering offers.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

What is the middle-band width, and why is it important?

The middle-band width is $60,120, which is the spread between the P25 and P75 percentiles. It helps hiring managers define salary bands based on typical professional experience rather than just the national median.

How does the Los Angeles area compare to the national median?

The Los Angeles median is $139,780, significantly higher than the national median of $120,630. This demonstrates the influence of regional market demands on compensation for electrical engineers.

Are the industry sector wages reliable for plant engineer offers?

These sector figures indicate broad industry compensation trends, not individual engineering wages. They should be used for relative context rather than as precise offer templates.
