What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Lead Production Technician, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Lead Production Technician in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$35,080$38,820$47,550
May 2025$36,030$40,110$49,010

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the actual remit?

Write down who is accountable for hands-on production support and guidance for other technicians today. If responsibility for hands-on production support and guidance for other technicians is divided between several people, tell us where this hire's work begins and ends. That explanation helps separate their capability from a team's success at hands-on production support and guidance for other technicians.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Lead Production Technician?

The median annual wage for Production Workers, All Other in the United States was $40,110 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $36,030 and $49,010. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $31,200. 90% earned less than $61,530.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Lead Production Technician at a plant?

Lead Production Technician is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 251,700 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Lead Production Technician positions are covered by the SOC 51-9199 occupation group. The national median wage is $40,110, showing an increase of 1290 from May 2024. The middle-band width is 12,980, calculated from the 25th percentile at $36,030 to the 75th percentile at $49,010.

Because BLS does not distinguish leadership roles in production, this guide focuses on screening candidates who demonstrate the ability to provide technical leadership and resolve process issues in a live manufacturing setting.

High-employment hubs like Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA, report a median of $39,520 with a 1610 increase. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA, reports a median of $40,970 with an 860 increase. Manufacturing Headhunters uses this comparative analysis to assist managers in calibrating their offers. The location quotient of 2.29 in Atlanta is significantly higher than that of Los Angeles, which indicates a greater reliance on the local labor force for these production-based skills.

National industry medians provide additional benchmarks, such as $77,630 for Tobacco Manufacturing (NAICS 312200), $68,720 for Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills (NAICS 322100), and $59,620 for Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing (NAICS 336400). These figures are national and do not include the specific leadership or shift differentials often provided to lead technicians. BLS does not track these non-wage components, so hiring managers should factor these separately when building their compensation packages.

The May 2025 data set contains no estimates and relies on objective percentages. The middle-band width of 12,980 helps in understanding the variance in production pay. When hiring for lead roles, the assessment must prioritize technical leadership in process decision-making over formal supervisory duties. Rely on the provided metrics to ensure offers remain within the reasonable band for this level of production work. The significant differences in regional metrics highlight the importance of reviewing both local and national data before finalizing any wage proposals.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

What differentiates a lead production technician from a standard operator?

The lead technician is screened for their ability to make process decisions during practical exercises. We look for individuals who demonstrate technical influence and process expertise rather than just formal disciplinary responsibility.

How should the industry-specific medians be applied?

The industry medians indicate the pay levels in high-complexity production sectors. They act as a benchmark for the upper ranges of the lead production role, demonstrating potential compensation for process-lead functions.

How does the location quotient impact my understanding of the labor market?

The location quotient highlights industrial density. A quotient of 2.29 in Atlanta, for example, suggests a deeper market for production talent, which can provide more options when seeking candidates with lead-level skills.
