What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Line Technician, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Line Technician in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$52,710$63,760$78,070
May 2025$55,010$64,520$78,780

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about safe work?

Fast lines have exposed motion and slippery floors. Lockout and guarding discipline decide whether someone is hurt. We ask about lockout steps, chemical exposure and how they respond to a coworker who reaches into a running machine.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Line Technician?

The median annual wage for Industrial Machinery Mechanics in the United States was $64,520 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $55,010 and $78,780. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $46,120. 90% earned less than $95,170.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Line Technician at a plant?

The Line Technician title maps to the published occupation. BLS does not separate this process, credential, shift or plant-specific title from other work in the occupation. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 439,640 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Line Technicians are included in the SOC 49-9041 Industrial Machinery Mechanics category. For Line Technician in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $64,520; the May 2024 median is $63,760. Their arithmetic difference is $760. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause.

The middle-band width is $23,770. This broad range captures a wide spectrum of mechanical experience. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that technicians capable of first-response fixes on complex lines with sanitary design typically command salaries in the higher tiers, though the BLS does not explicitly track these specific technical capabilities within the aggregate occupational data.

For Line Technician in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $55,010 to $78,780 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports a median of $94,200, and Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing shows a median of $83,790. These industry figures are substantially higher than the aggregate occupation median, reflecting the critical need for advanced mechanical proficiency in these environments. For Line Technician in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

Regional employment concentrations in major hubs provide additional labor market context. Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX shows a median of $63,180 with a middle-band width of $28,280 and a location quotient of 1.97. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX reports a median of $63,380, a middle-band width of $26,980, and a location quotient of 1.11. The higher location quotient in Houston shows that the occupation is essential in regional industrial activity. These numbers represent the broader occupational market and do not account for individual company pay structures or the specific value of technical skill sets like sanitary maintenance or mechatronics training.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Is the occupation median a good indicator of pay for a specialized line technician?

The median is a useful baseline, but specialized technicians who can handle complex line changeovers often earn toward the top of the middle-band range.

Why is the Petroleum industry median higher than the general occupation median?

The complexity and high-stakes environment of petroleum manufacturing necessitate higher wages for mechanical technicians. The general occupation median is lower because it averages in all types of industrial mechanics.

What is the importance of the middle-band width?

The width reveals that mechanical technician pay is highly variable. This variation confirms that employers account for individual skill levels and machine-specific experience during compensation planning.
