What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Maintenance Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $61,240 | $78,300 | $99,630 |
| May 2025 | $62,690 | $79,860 | $101,360 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.
- Worker occupation: Field Service Engineer pay (SOC 49-9041)
- Worker occupation: Millwright pay (SOC 49-9044)
- Worker occupation: PLC / Controls Technician pay (SOC 49-2094)
- Worker occupation: Industrial Refrigeration (Ammonia) Technician pay (SOC 49-9021)
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about reactive to planned?
The most useful single question is how the candidate changed the work mix. In a reactive department, most hours go to breakdowns, and any plan falls apart by mid-morning. Moving to planned work requires a clean backlog, job plans with parts and procedures, a weekly schedule that production agrees to, and discipline about not pulling technicians off for every call.
We ask candidates how they got production to release equipment, and how they handled a plant manager who pushed to keep running. Those who did it describe compromise and evidence. Those who talk only about software may not have done it.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Maintenance Manager?
The median annual wage for First-Line Supervisors of Mechanics, Installers, and Repairers in the United States was $79,860 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $62,690 and $101,360. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $49,600. 90% earned less than $126,790.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Maintenance Manager at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 617,500 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The Maintenance Manager role is mapped to the First-Line Supervisors of Mechanics, Installers, and Repairers occupation, 49-1011. As of May 2025, the national median salary is 79,860, showing a medianChange of 1,560 from the prior year. The middleBandWidth is 38,670, calculated from the p25 of 62,690 and the p75 of 101,360.
This occupation is broad, covering many supervisory roles that do not necessarily involve the advanced technical duties of a CMMS power user or the leadership required to drive MTBF improvements.
Industry-specific benchmarks are provided for national rows, such as Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing at 135,420 and Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills at 118,300. These values serve as specialized industry medians for the broad 49-1011 code. While helpful, these figures exclude non-salary compensation like maintenance reliability incentives or certifications like the CMRP. The BLS data only captures base salary, meaning the actual compensation for an experienced maintenance leader may differ significantly based on operational complexity.
In terms of major employment metros, New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ reports a median of 97,560, and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX shows a median of 78,740. The New York metro has a location quotient of 0.65, while the Dallas metro has a location quotient of 1.21. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that these metrics reflect the concentration of mechanics and repair supervisors rather than the market demand for strategic maintenance management. Since the SOC 49-1011 code is aggregated, these benchmarks reflect the broader supervisory market for technical staff. It is important for hiring managers to consider that maintenance management requires unique competencies that are not specifically teased out in these aggregate labor reports, making the data a high-level tool rather than an exact salary match.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Why is the Petroleum industry median so much higher than the national median?
The Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing sector reports a median of 135,420 compared to the national median of 79,860 for all supervisors. This gap represents industry-specific pay structures for technical supervisors.
Does the data include specific CMMS skills?
No, the OEWS data for supervisors does not reflect specific technical skills like enterprise maintenance management or enterprise asset management proficiency. It covers the broad 49-1011 supervisory occupation.
What does the location quotient of 1.21 in Dallas imply?
A location quotient of 1.21 in Dallas indicates that First-Line Supervisors of Mechanics are 21 percent more concentrated in that area than the national average. It does not measure the specific wage or availability of maintenance managers.
