What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Maintenance Supervisor, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Maintenance Supervisor in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$61,240$78,300$99,630
May 2025$62,690$79,860$101,360

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about breakdown response under pressure?

We ask them to describe the last major breakdown: how they triaged, who they called, how they communicated with production and how they documented it. We listen for whether they stayed calm, delegated and followed up with a root cause or just got the line running.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Maintenance Supervisor?

The median annual wage for First-Line Supervisors of Mechanics, Installers, and Repairers in the United States was $79,860 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $62,690 and $101,360. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $49,600. 90% earned less than $126,790.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Maintenance Supervisor at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 617,500 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Maintenance Supervisor role falls under the occupational code 49-1011, First-Line Supervisors of Mechanics, Installers, and Repairers. As of May 2025, the national median salary is 79,860, with a medianChange of 1,560 from the prior year. The middleBandWidth of 38,670 exists between the p25 of 62,690 and the p75 of 101,360.

This broad code accounts for all supervisory roles in the repair and mechanical sector, which covers everything from front-line crew leads to other technical supervisor roles, not specifically the breakdown response or PM compliance tasks that characterize a maintenance supervisor.

Specific manufacturing industries, such as Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing at 135,420 and Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills at 118,300, offer national wage benchmarks for the 49-1011 category. These sectoral medians provide a clearer picture for heavy industrial settings than the overall national average. The BLS data omits essential components like shift differentials, overtime eligibility, or maintenance performance incentives, which are critical components for maintenance supervisor roles. Consequently, the OEWS data should be seen as a base salary reference point rather than a total compensation package.

Comparing metros, New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ has a median of 97,560, while Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX has a median of 78,740. The location quotient for New York is 0.65 and for Dallas is 1.21. Manufacturing Headhunters emphasizes that these quotients measure how concentrated the supervisory workforce is in these areas, rather than local pay spikes for maintenance supervisors. Because the 49-1011 SOC is a broad-based occupational code, users should be aware that the local figures include many types of technical supervisors. Relying on this data requires careful interpretation, as it does not isolate the maintenance-specific duties common in manufacturing plants. Users must understand that these figures are high-level tools designed to track workforce trends within the broader supervisory occupational category.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Does the 49-1011 code isolate maintenance supervisor duties?

No, the code aggregates all first-line supervisors of mechanics, installers, and repairers. It does not distinguish between specific maintenance management responsibilities.

How should I interpret the industry-specific wage rows?

Industry rows like the 135,420 median for Petroleum indicate higher wage thresholds for technical supervisors in specific manufacturing segments. These are better benchmarks than the national 79,860 average.

What is the limitation of using this data for salary benchmarking?

The data is for a broad supervisor occupation and excludes maintenance-specific compensation factors like overtime and performance bonuses. It is best used as a starting baseline.
