What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Director of Maintenance, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.
An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $61,240 | $78,300 | $99,630 |
| May 2025 | $62,690 | $79,860 | $101,360 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.
- Worker occupation: Field Service Engineer pay (SOC 49-9041)
- Worker occupation: Millwright pay (SOC 49-9044)
- Worker occupation: PLC / Controls Technician pay (SOC 49-2094)
- Worker occupation: Industrial Refrigeration (Ammonia) Technician pay (SOC 49-9021)
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about reliability culture change?
The phrase appears on every resume. We ask for the specific mechanism: planning and scheduling rules, backlog policy, criticality ranking, condition monitoring, and the conflict with production when work orders were rejected. We look for what they stopped doing as well as what they started.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Director of Maintenance?
The median annual wage for First-Line Supervisors of Mechanics, Installers, and Repairers in the United States was $79,860 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $62,690 and $101,360. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $49,600. 90% earned less than $126,790.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Director of Maintenance at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 617,500 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The Director of Maintenance role is analyzed using the 49-1011 First-Line Supervisors of Mechanics, Installers, and Repairers occupational code. For Director of Maintenance in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $79,860; the May 2024 median is $78,300. Their arithmetic difference is $1,560.
They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. For Director of Maintenance in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $62,690 to $101,360 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. It is crucial to note that this code is designed for first-line supervisors, whereas a director role typically oversees multi-site strategies, budgets, and reliability culture changes, which are not explicitly measured in this occupational category.
National industry data, such as Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing at 135,420 and Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills at 118,300, provides necessary industry-specific context. These rows represent national medians for the broad 49-1011 code and illustrate the higher compensation levels found in heavy process industries. For Director of Maintenance in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.
The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro reports a median of 97,560, and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX shows 78,740. New York has a location quotient of 0.65, while Dallas has a quotient of 1.21. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that these quotients describe the employment density for supervisory roles within these hubs. As the director level often requires different skills compared to a first-line supervisor, these benchmarks represent a baseline for technical management rather than a specific target for director-level recruitment. Because the SOC classification is broad, hiring managers should treat these figures as part of a larger benchmarking process, keeping in mind that the BLS does not track the impact of strategic maintenance oversight on compensation for the director role specifically.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Is the median data sufficient for a director-level salary analysis?
The data is limited to the First-Line Supervisors category. It does not reflect the specialized, high-level duties of a Director of Maintenance.
What is the importance of the industry-specific medians?
They show how industries like Petroleum or Pulp and Paper pay supervisors significantly more than the national median of 79,860. These provide a better benchmark for maintenance-heavy industries.
Does the New York median include director-level roles?
The median of 97,560 in New York represents the broad 49-1011 supervisory occupation. It is not specifically reserved for director-level maintenance roles.
