What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Maintenance Planner / Scheduler, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $46,600 | $57,770 | $71,480 |
| May 2025 | $47,820 | $59,650 | $75,000 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about qualification in practice?
Qualified means a method the candidate can explain. We ask how they define a job plan, how they estimate labor, how they stage parts and how they handle a job that returns incomplete. We ask about backlog size and age, planned versus reactive work, and compliance with preventive tasks.
We ask which maintenance management system they used and whether they cleaned up its data. We ask how they built trust with technicians, since a planner who is resented gets ignored. Training in a recognized planning method or a reliability credential is helpful.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Maintenance Planner / Scheduler?
The median annual wage for Production, Planning, and Expediting Clerks in the United States was $59,650 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $47,820 and $75,000. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $40,080. 90% earned less than $86,000.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Is this the pay for a Maintenance Planner / Scheduler at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 390,160 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The Maintenance Planner/Scheduler role aligns with the Production, Planning, and Expediting Clerks category, 43-5061. The national median salary for this occupation as of May 2025 is 59,650, showing a 1,880 medianChange from May 2024. The middleBandWidth is 27,180, spanning from the p25 of 47,820 to the p75 of 75,000.
This broader clerical category includes various planning and scheduling roles, which may differ from the technical demands of a CMMS power user or maintenance backlog manager.
Industry-specific national medians for the 43-5061 category include Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing at 92,980 and Tobacco Manufacturing at 79,650. These values reflect the pay scale for planning clerks within those specific industries and offer a relevant comparison for the maintenance planning function. It is important to note that these BLS rows do not account for technical skills like work order kitting, backlog management, or advanced CMMS administration, which can drive higher compensation in professional maintenance planning.
Looking at high-employment metros, the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ area reports a median of 63,130, and the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA area reports a median of 61,810. The location quotient for New York is 1.2, while Los Angeles is 1.48. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that these quotients highlight the concentration of planning and scheduling personnel. These data points provide a general view of the labor pool in major hubs but do not isolate maintenance-focused planners. Hiring managers must account for the fact that these medians encompass a range of scheduling and planning clerical roles that may be less technical than a dedicated maintenance planning function. Consequently, these metrics represent the broader clerical hiring market rather than the specialized maintenance planning and scheduling market.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Are maintenance planning technical skills captured in this data?
No, the 43-5061 code captures general production, planning, and expediting clerks. It does not measure technical skills like CMMS usage or work order kitting.
What does the location quotient for Los Angeles indicate?
The location quotient of 1.48 indicates that planning and expediting clerks are 48 percent more concentrated in Los Angeles than the national average. It does not reflect wages or candidate quality.
How do industry-specific medians like Petroleum compare to the national average?
The Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing sector reports a median of 92,980, which is significantly above the national planning clerk median of 59,650. This indicates higher pay for these roles in capital-intensive industries.
